Good Evening (UK)

I am in the process of refurbishing of what I think is a 2547 (maybe a CE) no serial number that I can find.

The reason I say 2547, is because there is no sign of a catalyst, but it has a fibreboard/heatshield in the back of the unit. Seems to be just flopping about in the back, if there are any brackets used to position it they are long gone,

Rather remarkably it has all come to pieces quite easily.

Looking at the " parts list " for a 2547, I would say that the L and R firebricks are missing, and the heat shield and flue deflector are also missing.

The previous owner said that it chucked out too much heat, and got a smaller version. He seemed to think that you could fit a catalyst if you wanted.?

Bit of background, I've refurbished other stoves. typically French, and 19th Century. So I'm used to cutting mica panels for glass, making gaskets, and fitting fire rope. Ive also got an engineering and fabricating workshop, so can make most stuff thats needed of the steel variety. Not keen on brazing cast iron, it really is a specialist task. Ive only ever worked on stoves for our own house. This stove has been laying around for about 6 or 7 years, and I've now been instructed by her ladyship to replace our aged existing stove.

Questions:

1/ In the UK there are companies which make refractory and firebrick components for popular makes of stoves, typically of European origin. I cannot seem to locate anyone in the UK that provides components for VC stoves. Does anyone on this forum know of any such companies in the UK or US..? Or is everyone relying on NOS OEM components.?

2/ Can anyone on this forum share with me the size and dimensions of the heat shield and flue deflector? I also need to know how and where they are located/fitted as they are missing. In the UK, you won't get much change out of $500 for both of these components, and as there is approx $25 of stainless steel involved in their construction, I thought to make them myself.

3/ Is there a diagram showing what sizes of fire rope are needed and where used.? As I have been dismantling the unit, it appears some components have a groove to accommodate a narrow piece of fire rope, but the previous owner simply stuffed a bead of fire cement into the groove. This may be the correct approach, but I doubt it. So if anyone has a guide on what to put what and where, that would be great,

4/ Am I right in thinking that these stoves dont have fire bricks/firewalls in the traditional sense? Relying on a cast inner skin, and air wall between this and the sides.? Personally I would not have thought that it was good workshop practise to have heat/flame directly in contact with the cast iron sides? This is a dual fuel model, and I'm assuming the L and R firebricks, go someway to create a basket to contain any hot coals, but the the rear plate would be in contact with hot coals. Should their be some further firebricks along the back wall.??

5/ I am presuming if this model could be converted into a cat model, coals could no longer be used.??

6/ The back of the unit has a square fibreboard which doesn't seem to be " fitted " anywhere, does anyone know how and where this is fitted?

7/ On the parts list there is a component called secondary air cover plate.! What secondary air system.? Do I need this plate? As far as I can tell there is a primary air system, adjusted by the handle on the right, and a damper operated by a lever on the left at the side/back. The grate cover has a further adjustable air inlet (which kinda makes sense as you would need to draw air in from under any lit coals) I notice on the 2550 model there is a rear secondary system which seems to be controlled by some bimetallic strip or such like. There are holes in the back of the 2547 to accommodate such a system, but it is missing. Does the 2547 have such a system fitted?

In the real world, I would like access to a video describing and showing in pictures how this unit functions, and shows all the components in place.

Sorry for all the questions, but thx in advance for any pointers or help

Best regards Martin

Is there a label on the rear of the stove with specific model information?

Some pictures may be helpful with identification.

Its actually all in bits now, I've been chatting to a few installers, and it seems it is a 2547. There is nothing missing apart from some fire bricks. The deflectors are fitted externally, and I am fitting it into a large marble fire place, which doesn't need them. I shall probably fashion some myself. I would still be curious to know whether this unit could be converted into a cat model. thx

The Encore 2547 can not be converted to catalytic operation. Woodmans Parts Plus (US) sells VC parts.
