Hello everyone. My name is Russ and this is my first time here. How can I determine if refractory mortar was used between bricks in the firebox?

Hi Russ! Is this in a fireplace or woodstove? If in a woodstove, the bricks have been dry fitted in all of the stoves I've owned.

Thank you for responding. During inspections, it's required to point out if the mortar isn't refractory. I can't think of some distinguishing feature to figure out if it's correct.
