Hello.
I’ve recently picked up a wood stove insert.
The insert is a tight fit and won’t allow me to get my hands behind it and the brick to attach the liner.
Two questions, can I remove bricks to allow me room to work and is this common or is my insert too large?

Which insert?

Of course you can always remove bricks but it depends on where, if they are structural or decorative, and how they affect the weight above them. Pictures help us visualize the problem and offer solutions. There may be more than one. Post a photo and you will get some solid recommendations.
