So, woodstoves get hot...sometimes really hot. Funny enough, the stove top thermometer that is all metal also gets hot...melt the skin on your fingers hot sometimes. Also, once said thermometer has melted said fingers it will become a mystical flying projectile of death...and quickly melt whatever or whoever it lands on...

Just a heads up....also this was hard to type while using one hand to warm some ice cubes.

When I was just out of school my dad gave me his old lawn mower that just barely working. It would rattle like crazy. After a couple hours of mowing I became embarrassed about the ratting and set out to fix it.

I shut the mower off to be safe and stared grabbing pieces of the mower.

Nope, not the air filter.
Not the recoil
Not the linkage or handle

I then grabbed the muffler with my bare right hand and instantly singed my first two fingers and thumb.

Yea, that was fun explaining to everyone...

I never approach a stove without both gloves on. Just know that someday I am gonna trip on the hearth and the reflex will be to put both hands out.

First, dog is trying to figure what it did wrong today...he's got a lot of treats and love in return for getting swatted in a panic as said thermo was melting his fur...

Second, I was going to start a thread asking what people do with the left handed gloves...for some reason all of mine are pristine...but the right hand ones are destroyed.

Third, I've been messing around with a piece of soapstone that I placed on my stove but I had to move the thermo before replacing the cold stone onto the stove. I mean my friend had to move the thermo.

PS: dog is fine, he has thick fur, no burned skin, but burnt dog hair stinks.

It's kinda funny and dumb at the same time but I did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. The stove was getting a little dusty on top so I wanted to give it a quick wipe off with a dry rag. I dug in a drawer and found a rag, went in started wiping the stove off and not thinking just grabbed the thermometer to move it over. I had two perfectly curved burns on my pointer finger and thumb. Won't do that again any time soon

When I was 12 i lived off a small highway and was first on scene to a bad motorcycle accident, after calling 911 I ran back to the scene and trying to be a good Boy Scout I started picking up all the motorcycle pieces off the highway. With both arms full I came up to the exhaust and foolishly picked it up. Ended up blistering every finger on my hand. Lesson learned.

Three years ago I brought in wood and was loading the stove. Hadn't swung the door all the way open and looked left and the door latch was buried in my down filled vest with smoke pouring out of the vest.

The place smelled like somebody set a duck on fire in the family room.

I have not seen any posts about IR guns causing burned fingers. Hint. As an added attraction, IR guns are lot of fun for the cat or dog to play with.

Hope your fingers are healed for Christmas and you didn't need to go to ER. I stuck my finger in part of the tractor's 3PT linkage and snipped off a quarter inch just after I visited you. Felt like a cigar cutter in a godfather movie. Spent 10 hrs in ER. Back to normal now but still can't feel the G spot.

Geezuz Doug, I work on machinery all day, and have learned the hard way about staying clear of the moving bits. However I seem to burn my fingers on a regular basis, to the point half my finger prints are missing. Soldering irons are typically my arch nemesis. I see me and the thermo are going to have frequent angry discussions as well.

I missed the special at Canadian tire, they had their master craft IR gun on sale for $20 last week as well. Almost bought one, then figured why bother...go figure. Honestly I like have the thermo on the stove. It's always right where I left it, I can't say the same thing for anything portable in this house. My daughter is a bit of a clepto, spent two hours last week looking for my deer control licence, only to find it in her bed. I could just imagine her fascination with anything that works like a laser pointer!

About the gloves I was able to talk my wife into sewing some patches into the finger tips where they wore through.

About burns, well I accidentally bumped the stove with my forearm while reloading it. Like you said skin melted instantly.

It only moved a bit. About the width on my finger. Yup, my finger prints are not the same now either.

Speaking of melting, it's getting close to 80 in the living room right now. I loaded up the Equinox without thinking that it's not that cold outside. IR gun on the stove pipe adapter is 550, top of soapstone is in the mid 300's. That's way below getting hot but mygawd does this thing give off heat.

A few times during the season I look at the forecast and load up the stove based on it. And about the time the stove is cranking I look again and the wind has shifted to from the South and the forecast has jumped 20 degrees. And I make the announcement.

"Honey, it's gonna get pretty warm in the joint tonight."

Yeah it's warming up. I find the kitchen gets into the 80's here too, but it doesn't stay there for very long. This old house could use some more insulation I suppose. I put the stone back on my stove, it seems to keep the temp just a bit longer. I've run a month without it and now running with it to see if I notice any measurable difference now that I can monitor the temps.

500 degree skillet got me on once. Bumped the top of my hand on a burn tube once, but reacted quick enough to avoid much pain. Bumped my elbow on the glass while wearing a fleece pull over. Melted on the glass and my elbow. Pain to get off both.

I work on commercial bakery equipment. Lots of times you are making adjustments in between runs, with the oven holding at 400. Yeah, I know how you feel. One time I was working on a belt fed pizza oven. I was tensioning the belt, and put the palm of my hand right on the belt as it came out of the oven. I had a zigzag pattern burned onto my hand for 3 weeks.
