If it smells like sarsasparilla, it's Sassafras.

I can always tell sass by the orange underside of the bark. Hard to tell by your pics. The first does look like it. The second one the bark appears to be too dark.

flattened ridges on the bark make it look more like a hickory to me, but then again I can't smell it from here ;)

I think it's Ash. Everything is starting to look like maple anymore though.

Like Boiler said, sass has a yellow green hue and the sap and heart wood are distinctly different color. That looks more uniform throughout like ash maybe maple?? Tough to tell from bark alone. How about an end on pic of a round?

Could be right, Pauly...look on the flat cutside to see if there is a small "pinhole" in the center. Does it have that sweet smell to it like Sassy does? If not, and there's a pinhole it might very well be Ash.

Dat's ash, man, way more better than sass. I gots me ah mountain of it, tanks to da little green monster.;lol

No way that is sassafras.

Sorry, it's all split. It burns great too. I looked at some sasafrass online and agree it's not. Still not quite sure if it's ash. I've cut a lot of ash in this woods and this tree didn't look like the others. In the end it's firewood and that's all that matters. Thanks!

I hear what your saying. All that matters now is having something to burn this late, especially this winter.
