Secondary burn

If the refractory insulator, that encloses the catalyic combustor is damaged, pieces missing, will it cause air
leakage that could cause a out of control fire? Higher burn rates? Possible damage to the stove?

The Dutchwest is pretty notorious for needing refractory rebuilds. Much of your post depends on how bad the condition really is. Some small imperfections are probably not a big issue. On the other hand, missing chunks and pieces and crumbling refractory as you stated can cause burn issues.
