Shelter sides rolled up, wood stash revealed..

Decided it was time to roll up and secure the tarp sides of the shelter. They will remain open until Fall to maximize wind and sun.. I estimate about 5-6 cords inside the shelter with approximately 4 freshly stacked cords outside to be left there until March 2013.

Thanx WG! The base is my old deck which I believe is 12'x16'.. The roll up sides allow for great seasoning in the mild weather and keep the bulk of the weather out when I need to keep it dry..It's also convenient not having to remove them then store them. I found using 2 bungee straps on the corners makes them last much longer..

I would like to do something like that on my shed on the southern facing side. Can you supply details? I was thinking some hooks spaced to match the grommets on a regular blue tarp and a piece of conduit or treated 1x4 at the bottom to roll the tarp around.
Anyone know if there are any tarps made that don't fall apart after a few years?

Have you thought about some black rubber roofing for the sides of your shed, Ray? somethin that you could roll up on the breezy days, and roll down on those really hot sunny days to help run the temp waaaay up in that shed. I plan on making my roof black (either rubber or steel roof) and doing the front and sides with rubber roofing material that I can roll up on a dowel or something. So on the really sunny and hot days you can drop those down, and roll them up in the evenings if you want. I'm kicking around some ideas. I get in trouble sometimes for thinking TOO MUCH......lol....

The problem with that Scott is that the air circulation will do more to dry that wood than the heat will.

The silver tarps from Harbor Freight are super tough. I have 5 on the shelter that are still original.. I simply nailed scrap wood across the top and through the tarp.. Just roll them up and secure them.

This works fine as-is so it's staying the way it is.. If something works why tamper with it?

Thanx Dennis! I am at a good comfort level with enough wood in the shelter for about 2 yrs. and another year stacked on pallets uncovered in the wind and sun.. I find the wood in the shelter seasons well too as it generally stays dry and gets at the wood all the time..

Thanx NH! I wish I had some of that rubber for the tops of the outside stacks.. Until then they just remain open and it keeps rodents out as they will get wet when it rains, a good thing!

Not yet Ray, I'll see what we have at the end of the summer. We actually need a storage shed before the woodshed. It would be nice by the time fall rolls around to have 70-80 one inch thick boards milled this year.

Last year I milled the boards 1.25 inches thick, wish I had listen to Smokin and went with one inch boards.

Yup that's pretty heavy stuff! One inch would have been plenty for the sides or roof..

YW.. The blue tarps are no good for outside use. The heavy duty tarps don't tend to tear and can handle the UV rays as well..

Ray do you find those are better tarps for the money? I know the blue ones dont last and I dont want to spend $100 for a tarp. If these would last 2-3 years I would consider that getting my moneys worth.

Yes they are 10X better than the blue tarps! My shelter has the smallest (x5) front and back and 2- 12x16' on the sides..They last years in my application.. The blue ones rip very easily while these do not rip.. This makes a world of difference! BG told me about them or Gooserider I can't remember but they are worth the difference in cost.. The flat rate shipping ends tomorrow so you best order now if you're gonna do it..

Thanks Again! I will probably get them locally. Good to see they don't fall apart like the blue tarps. Probably more water prooof as well, but that isn't a big concern in this application.
