Bought a new door assembly for my hearthstone heritage...put it all together and it doesn't seem to be latching properly...i put all 4 spacers that the manufacturer gave me...do i need another washer or something to put in there?

Did you check the body of the stove (and the door even though it should be good) for straightness w/ a good straight edge? What caused you to have to replace the original door?

Sorry original question isn't correct...i bought a door LATCH assembly. I put a new gasket on the origianal door and a person who services stoves told me I would need a new door latch assembly also which after taking off the old one i can see why...many parts were worn...now the situation is that I don't have enough space between the door and the latch...i used the 4 spacers that the manufacturer gave me which doesn't seem to be enough...went to home depot, lowes and a couple of other places looking for somethign similar and no go...contacted the place i bought it from and they buy from hearthstone and hearthstone doesn't sell the spacers individualy....any ideas?

Any chance that gasket wasn't the correct size and that is keeping things from setting where they should?

pen

Can you take a pic to show us?

What exactly is the problem? Does the door close
tightly, but not seal? Is the door not closing all the way?
Did you put the spring on the outside of the door frame?
You may already have too many spacers in there, but
if you think you need more, use the ones from
the original latching mechanism...
A pic will definitely help

So a new gasket and a new latch and then this,

" I don't have enough space between the door and the latch"

Meaning you need more space between door and latch which sure sounds like everything is too tight. The gaskets on the hearthstone are quite dense, unlike the regular fiberglass ropes of other brands. Does it latch? Did you follow directions exactly? Clean the old door channel of glue? If it is functional and you did everything right then I would likely give the gasket a chance to settle.

Look at the spacers that you have on your door and you will see how thin they are....basically over time they have worn off...i used all 4 spacers from the manufacturer and getting another one is $20.

The door does not latch...i followed directions cleaned the channel where the gasket is now...basically the door will close but when I go to turn the latch it won't go into the space provided on the body of the stove which leads me to believe i need more spacers but i am not going to spend $20 to get one if i can use something else

What size gasket did they sell you for sealing the door?
Are you saying that the original spacers from the first
latch assembly are completely worn away & can't be re-used?
Without sounding TOO condescending, are the spacers on
the inner side of the door & the spring on the outer side? You
won't be the first one to get them mixed. Hearthstone is NOTORIOUS
for their bad latch designs...

I can't remember the exact size of the gasket but it fit into the channel ... I have the spring on the outside of the door and the spacers on the inside of the door...
i'm at the point now that i might try to get a service person out but don't want to pay the money...very frustrating

If I may..

The problem is that you can't get the door to latch now, correct?

Hearthstone is VERY explicit about which gasket to use. It sounds to me like you didn't use the right gasket, and/or the gasket you used is to thick. I would also extend the fact that, many times, the first time a user replaces a gasket, it's a couple tries to get it "right".. learning curve and all that.

The door wasn't latching properly before I put the gasket on....i replaced the gasket...replaced the latch assembly because a guy that installs/services stoves told me that I need to replace the latch...i replaced both the latch and the gasket and now the door won't latch properly...

I cleaned the channel like indicated....i put the gasket on and closed the door with something behind to make sure the door was closed being the latch at the time wouldn't work...is my issue that the gasket didn't compress enough possibly? does it do that right from the beginning? if i take the gasket off will i be able to use it again?

One option may be to re-install the original latch to see if it works better.
If it does, compare the two & make sure you were sold the correct one.
The gasket should compress adequately the first time, altho it may be
difficult to compress completely...The main reason
to leave it closed overnight is for the adhesive to set up.
I'm thinkin you were sold the wrong gasket ot the wrong latch or BOTH.

They latch assembly is identical...i will take another look at the gasket...the purchase came with two different sizes and i'm sure i used the right size for the door.

This, "replaced the latch assembly because a guy that installs/services stoves told me that I need to replace the latch" is troubling. You took the word of some guy that has never seen your stove that you need to replace parts. Did he also sell you the gasket? I suspect he sold you standard universal gasket material and you should know that Hearthstone gasket rope is special.

He DID NOT sell me anything. The latch was not working properly during the burning season and i was going through wood like crazy. I also noticed the gaskets seemed very old. I was going to have him install the gaskets but he recommended that I get a new latch assembly too becasue the parts were worn out and not working properly anymore.

Rory, here are some steps to take to determine a fix:

1. Eyeball the interface between the door and doorframe as you swing the door shut. The blade on the door should center in the gasket channel. If it is too low, you might have lost one of the tiny spacers Hearthstone uses on the hinge pins to fine-tune the fit.

2. If the door/frame interface is good, use a screwdriver to scrape out the door gasket and try closing and latching the door. If the door latches, the gasket was too large: order a new Heritage gasket kit from Hearthstone, part #90-58210.

3: If the door won't latch with the gasket removed, examine the catch area on the doorframe, to see if the little tab the locking cam on the latch slides behind has worn or broken off. If it is badly worn or missing, order a new doorframe.

4: If the catch area on the doorframe looks OK, loosen the set screw on the door handle, re-position the handle on the shaft, and tighten the set screw. Re-adjust and test until the door latches. Replace the gasket, and try again. If the door won't latch with the gasket in place, refer to step 2.

I took the gasket off the door and then put the door and handle back onto the stove. At first the door wasn't closing properly until I lifted it up. I have one spacer on each hinge which has been there since I bought the house with the stove in it.

Does this mean there is something wrong with the frame of the stove? Or is it that I need another spacer in there? Honestly this door has been giving me problems closing all winter too, which is probably one of the reasons why I went through as much wood as I did.

Another question is will I be able to use the gasket that I took out this thing for the kit that I bought online that came from hearthstone (I think) cost me about $55 plus shipping. Can I buy direct from hearthstone?

Overall I am trying to avoid paying someone $185 for a service call for something that i can fix myself. have already spent $150 on parts alone and it will eat into the savings this stove has provided me so far. I thank everyone for there ideas on figuring out my problem!

OK, now try this:

Remove the spacer from the lower hinge pin and move it to the upper pin, so the two spacers are stacked. This should lift the door enough to align the latch mechanism. Test the latch to determine it works, then glue the gasket back in. Close and latch the door, and leave it closed at room temperature overnight while the cement cures. To complete the procedure, find a picture of Thomas Jefferson (hint: look in your wallet) and mail it to:

Hint well taken and will do just that!!!

before i send you that $1,000,000 bill I have one more question...i have to replace the ash pan gasket on the stove...be easier to leave the door on rather than taking the pipe off the top of the stove leading the chimney to lift up the stove? There is a pin that holds the door in place and I can't get it to come out completely the floor is in the way.
