I usually load with a mix of bigger and smaller. Once the fire is established. Usually start with half a firebox full of paper, kindling, small stuff with a couple big pieces on the outside bottom corners. Then reload full a half hour later. That bridging thing can be tricky, and sneak up on a person when not suspecting.
