I have a sensitive neighbor who is challenged by smoke. I may not have been burning this stove correctly to get full cat usage.
I have watched serveral vids on fire starting, newspaper bed, lots of dry kindling to start and heat the flue.
Starting this way gave me 1/2 hour of full smoke backing into the house. I re-lit it several times and it finally took off, got the 600 degrees and ran no smoke from the chimney. Excellent. I have always started with dry kindling and no paper, and never had a back up smoke issue.
The stove is clean, the cat is clean and open, the auto damper on the back seems to function (pull the cable) if heated with a heat gun. When it is cold, the little cable is loose and when heated, it pulls but not much. I am not sure if it is functioning or if this is the smoke problem.
Neighbor is threatening lawsuit.
3 year old stove, old house.

Try the top down fire starting technique.

How dry is your wood? How long does your stove generally smoke for on start up ? Is your neighbor being unreasonable or are you smoking out the neighborhood?
