Just got the new ariens 22 ton splitter about a week ago and started on some enormous rounds. Went through them without issue vertically. Special thanks to all for the splitter recommendations... And backwoods is right... vertical splitting and sitting is the way to go!

I do it when its best.

I find the milk crate to be a little too low so I use a maple round I cut just the height that's comfortable for me. It took getting used to but I like splitting while sitting, why stand when you can sit ==c

I use one of the rounds I'm working with. When sitting to the side, like I do, you have to be weary of the rare ejected split that heads toward your shin at the speed of sound. Doesn't happen much, but does happen.

I'm a vertical splitter myself. A 16"length Round from the "to be split" pile works best for seating arrangements. And a HotSeat cushion in cold weather.
And Hot spiced cider with Captain Morgan's spiced rum. ;-)

I'm 6ft 4, I have used a 5 gallon bucket thus far and wouldn't want anything shorter... :)

Ever try one of these?
Would be pretty simple to make your own also.

Yup. That is one of the reasons I sit behind the split rather than on the side. It also makes handling the wood easier whereas if sitting on one side, it would seem to cause some reaching that I don't care to do.

I learned the first day I used the splitter not to sit on the side, was splitting some maple and a split popped and hit me in the shin.

I sit behind it. I did have a few splits fall forward and hit me in the shin... I should use my daughter's soccer shin guards for protection.

I too have that splitter, just the Gravely one, same splitter. I like the vertical also and very easy to convert back to horizontal too.
