What is the consensus on a good brand/model with good value. I need magnetic for vertical surface.

What is the specific application? If it's for a single wall stove pipe, most members here like the Condar Chimgard here (broken link removed to http://www.condar.com/stovepipe_meters.html)

Note that these will only be useful with single wall pipe. Double wall pipe needs the probe-type.

sorry, I need 2 for my inserts and 1 for double wall pipe. For a stand alone stove, do you mount it on the stove or the pipe?

I see. I use both a magnetic Condor "Inferno" for the the stove top (freestanding stove) and a Condar "Fluegard" probe-type for the double wall pipe.

Inserts can be a problem to find a good place to put a thermometer. You may also consider an infrared thermometer like this one.(broken link removed to http://www.ebay.com/itm/Temperature-Gun-Infrared-Thermometer-w-Laser-Sight-Non-Contract-US-SELLER-/171144798534) Much more accurate and you can point it anyplace you want and use it for both inserts. I actually have all three plus an electronic thermocouple meter (PID), but I'm kind of a gadget guy.

I imagine you were joking:), but I just tried on my wife's ear (she's a good sport). It has a wide opening so is hard to aim into an orifice, but it came out 96.4. Not bad, but I'd get a proper IR clinical thermometer...

i was half joking, but after that test I'm guessing it may work--that's assuming your wife doesn't actually have a fever now. :)

My 7-year old will probably break the thing using it as a cat toy.

You don't want kids to be playing with laser lights anyway.
