I couldn't get it tight enough without marring the bar, so I shod the stump vise with a bike inner tube, and it works great now; no need to overtighten the thumb screw

I do something similar with the regular vise when I chuck the saw on there to sharpen. A little bit of rubber goes a long way to keep an oily bar from sliding around.
