Thunder Ice?

We're about 40 miles north of the M&D line on the northern fringe of this storm. Only saw an inch and a half of snow with a light coating of ice forecast for overnight. In York Co. they received nearly 8". Since we started heating with wood, I don't get that concerned with ice knocking out our power. We just sit back and watch.
A squirrel farts and we are out for a day or more. But we are safe this year. On the other leg in the neighborhood, the one that doesn't go out, after only one power failure in 20 years the neighbor down the hill this summer had a transfer switch installed and bought an 8K genny. Three houses down the guy spent 20 grand on a big Generac and 500 gallon propane tank.

I know when we get "thunder snow" it's usually a pretty good dumping.

So much for that. Power went out at six thirty AM. 30,000 of us in our coop out. Genny running and coffee is made.

. No big deal the ground is till very warm and forecast is for the 40s later. I think my road is probably more slippery from all the salt they dumped on it than it could have been from ice.

Same here, Flatbead. The roads here are pretty slick from the leftover sleet mess. I have scratched a long distance trip I was going to take today.
And just a bit north of you BB it is all rain here. The kids want some white stuff to play in but I am perfectly fine not having to deal with it or breaking out the genny.
About 1am we had a single clap of thunder, woke everyone up in the house as it must have hit about a mile away.

Rain, Ice...ain't happening here. Last night at 8:00 I registered minus 7F. Too cold for any of that liquid water.
Got power back yesterday afternoon. Now it has been snowing for several hours. For us this is what we don't get until January. And only every four years or so even then. Temps headed down and will be in the teens this evening. I will take a pic of my 900 foot snow over ice downhill ski run that we usually call a driveway in a little while. If I wanted this crap I would have moved farther North.
Just a bit north here and it is still a rain event for us, they are calling for it to switch over to snow later today but I won't hold my breath.

I like snow. Not fond of sleet/ice/slop.
Got about 6 inches Sunday, rain/slop on top of that yesterday, more snow today. Bring it on!!

Even some snow up in the NYC area today. Ground is still pretty warm so I don't think it will end up being too much. Just enough to make for a lousy traffic day.

Actually if you had been up this way you would have been sitting pretty. Yesterday we got maybe an inch of snow at best . . . I can still see grass poking out through the snow at the nearby Waterfront Concert Pavilion. Pretty mild storm for us here.

Last two Winters up here have pretty much been a bust . . . had to trailer the sled two hours north to go riding . . . makes for a short and expensive riding season.

I just read BB's headlines about "thunder ice" and I actually thought it was about the sound that ice makes when the lakes are freezing up.
What I was hoping to read about was the sound that lakes make when they start to freeze. Its hard to explain, but here goes. Almost like someone is beating on a very large bass drum...but underwater...and at the same time, kinda gurgling. The sound may start faintly because you are hearing it only miles away, then it increases in volume and intensity as it shoots past you and then fades off. Throw in a couple of sharp cracks while this is going on. Its really something and almost compares to northern lights (but only in its rarity, I guess, cuz who can beat northern lights).
Has anyone else heard this? Is there a better way to describe it? Kinda spooky and when it happens while you are on the ice, you don't know it you're going through or not as it shoots past you!!

Feeling the Heat
that's kind of what ice sounds like when it is collected on shore and keeps getting pushed across the ground. I recently found a video on you tube. this sounds almost like a faint train.
