Time to Upgrade?

Bought our house in January of 2012 and installed a 25PDVC that we got off of craigslist for $400. It has been doing a great job, had only been turning the oil furnace (forced air) on twice a week when I cleaned the stove.

Woke up on Tuesday with the temp in the house only at 60, furnace is set to 65 just in case (about 5 outside). Our oil line had gelled/froze the one time we actually needed the furnace to run. Got the line unfrozen, but the same thing happened on Wednesday and Thursday temp got done to 58 inside, luckily we also have electric baseboard heat in the bedrooms. Looks like the limit for the PDVC in our house is about 15-20 outside temp.

I have been looking to get a Harman P-Series and this looks like the perfect excuse to do so. Anyway a dealer close to me quoted me around MSRP for a P43, but I asked about demo models and they have last years P68 burn model available with stainless trim listed for $3000. I know this is probably overkill for the house (1800 SQ FT), but is the price a good deal? I was thinking about offering a little lower or trying to get a ton or two of Hamers for free. Any ideas?

I would upgrade if i were you IF you like pellet heat. I tried out a used Mt Vernon non AE and was impressed and went right out and bought a brand new one. Wasnt a believer in pellet stoves so i tested the water

seeing posts this week about people regretting buying a stove to big, and are happy they did this week

I love the pellet stove heat, so much more comfortable and cheaper than the forced hot air. No question that I want to stay with it.

Because I vent out and then up (didn't know any better at the time) my only choices are stoves with exhaust 10-14" off the ground. Current exhaust is 13.5", but I can build a new hearth to raise the stove a little bit. The P-Series is 10" so I can handle that. Should I try to get the dealer to come down some on the pricing for the P68 demo unit or does $3000 seem fair?

Your getting a fair price as long as the warrantee starts when you take delivery.

Have you tried changing from "D" mode to "C" mode? my house is 1600sf and we were in negative temps for the last three weeks. I bought my stove last week and in "D" it wasn't cutting it. I changed to "C" and all the difference in the world. I went from running on 9 to running on 3 with 80° temps in the house. It has been great. We finally got to mid 20's today and I have been running the stove on 1 and it has been keeping the house from 75 to 77 and sipping pellets. Worth trying IMHO.

I changed to "C" and all the difference in the world. I went from running on 9 to running on 3 with 80° temps in the house. It has been great. The PDVC heated the house great except for this week when temps have been getting into the single digits, but having to scrape the pot twice a day and totally shut down once a week gets old after a while. I don't know what I would have done without the PDVC this week, it would have been freezing in here. I will never own a home without more than one heat source.

Dealer said it is a full warranty. I want to make an offer on the stove but I don't want to be too crazy. Would an offer of $2500 be too low (hoping to pay no more than 2750)?

Don't blame you a bit. I just installed my PDVC last week and am already researching its replacement. I am looking at the P68 as well. But that Mt Vernon is a dam sexy stove too. Good luck in your search! Sounds like you are heading down the right road.

The Mt Vernon does look nice, but I am pretty much locked into getting a Harman P-Series stove unless I want to make a new hole and move the thimble. If I had known what I know now when I installed the PDVC I would have gone up and then out, but not much I can do now except look for a stove with an exhaust 10-14" off the floor.

New the that stove lists for around $ 4000 so $3k is not a bad deal. Ask if he can do better, if not tell him to throw in a ton of Hammer's and you'll take it

The P68 is a great unit and if you get it for your 1,800 sqft house, you'll never have to worry about being cold - ever. If $2,750 is your cap, I'd go to the bank and get cash and see if that works, if not go to 3K and see if they can throw in a ton of pellets Do they have a P61? That would do the job as well and might fit the price range?
