Hey everyone,

The house we bought last year had a prefab fireplace built into the living room corner. We did a few burns with it during the winter time and although it looked nice, it was not practical for heating. So earlier this March i began contacting several local dealers about having the unit swapped with a zero clearance wood stove. After consulting and looking at different models, we chose the Osborn Stratford II. This unit was practically the same size as the old majestic fireplac, several of the other units would of required the wall to move outward to accommodate them.

I removed all the drywall to make It easier on the installers for removal. After a long wait for parts to get back in stock we finally have the stove installed and electrical wired for the blower. The only item that is left is the faceplate which will hopefully arrive this week.

the old unit is pictured in #1.

The new Osborn unit installed.

I read In the manual that any insulation material inside the cavity should be covered and to reduce the risk of any falling onto the unit. I bought sheets of 1/4” durock and covered the insulation as a preventative measure.

What about attic insulation falling down on top of the stove. I could just imagine some hired insulation blower filling that up to flush with the rest of the attic floor!

Take a look at your manual before you button everything up. Yours looks the exact same as my Lafayette which with a 6 inch raised base requires sheet metal both 2 inches out on the floor which you show in your pictures but also 2 inches up the base from the floor and 2 inches down from the fireplace.

There should be a fireblock at the ceiling level. This will prevent any insulation from falling from above. In this case it may take using an insulated wall radiation shield on the bottom side?

we plan on having a raised hearth and per the manual it will need to be a Z shaped sheet metal piece from the bottom of the stove to the hearth. It needs to be a 2” piece, but I am going larger to play it safe.

There is a fire lock at the ceiling where the chimney goes up to the 2nd floor and in the attic there is an insulation block. We are still waiting on a few parts to finish the install before I close off the wall.

Thought I would post some updates of the install. We finished it during the beginning of October as the hearth stone had been delayed. For the wall finish we used Airstone from Lowes and it was very easy to use. The mantle I built out of pine boards and gave it a distressed look before staining. The stove works beautifully and heats the house up wonderfully. We are having our first snow now.

Here are some pictures of the day I built the mantle. My helper sat next to me during the entire build.
