Found a used Drolet heatmax (not the new model, two years old I believe) on line for $800. Ad says it’s never been used, but was dropped in shipment. When I go look at it what should I look for as far as if it’s worth purchasing? Ad claims damage is to outer sheet metal only

No thanks. That thing should be scrapped. Okay, maybe 20% of new.

I wouldn't pay more than $200... maybe $300. And yes that is the old t1/heatmax1.
Should be able to get a new factory fan casing through drolets website to return it to original condition. Use it for a few years untill it starts cracking then file a warranty claim (they have lifetime warranty for cracks only for the t1 and heatmax1 which 95% of them do develop after little use).

Long as it still has the serial number and identification it tack... Might even get a new heatmax 2 out of the deal lol.

Also make sure to get original receipt from the buyer for any warranty claims.

Price seems a bit strong to me. I might, maybe, give $500 for it.
You might be a able to straighten that blower box out too...take it apart and bang out the individual panels...sheet metal can be worked around a lot.
I wouldn't count on warranty...would have to be filed as the original owner...and that serial number may be listed as damaged or scrap already too...also, if it is one of the newer T1's, they didn't have the same warranty as the earlier ones did, so that firebox cracking issue wouldn't be covered unless it cracked on a weld, for a newer T1...

Yeah that's true. Completely forgot they amended the warranty on the newer T1s.

But regarding the original owner to claim warranty... I'v read (pretty sure on the big tundra fourm) few people buying used and still being able to use warranty. Any scraped or "refunded" furnaces the owner had to send the identification/ serial number back to the manufacture.

T1 is the original Tundra...then they redesigned a few things and came out with the TII (current version)

I wouldn't give much of anything for that furnace, especially if you can't see it run. You'd need to know what you are looking at to know what damage there is and if you don't know that model, you can't. In any case, 800 is way more than I'd give and I know the model well.
