Used Jotul F400 Castine... suggestions

I am going to look @ / pick up a 2012 Jotul Castine. is there anything i need to be leery of or anything in particular that i need to take special note of or check for. the stove has only had a few fires in it. any suggestions or comment would greatly be appreciated. thank you fellow wood burners.

Look carefully at the stove body below the door, paying special attention to the corners. If the stove was over-fired because the ash pan door was used to increase the draft, these areas are where the damage will be evident. I'd also look at the baffle for distortion as well. If it has buckled at all, I'd be wary of how the unit was used for those "few" fires...

Check the sec baffle as Bob mentioned above, also the back burnplate will look buckled too if the ash door was open a lot. I wouldn't expect it to be anything but normal, why are they selling?? Price? New, we sell the matte black for 1899 MSRP is around 2059. Castines are great stoves too, congrats.

They are selling because they bought the house and it was just put in but they replaced it with a pellet stove. its 1500 with the fireplace tools and 5-3' sections of class a chimney pipe and the through the ceiling kit.

Inside the stove check the grate and the base surrounding the grate. Look for any crack radiating outward from where the grate is recessed. On the exterior look for any unusually light grey areas in the paint, particularly around the door, top and flue exit.

Bottom plate and back plate... mostly. Usually a sign of overfire or burning with the ash pan door open etc. Don't get turned off if gasket is falling off that's easy. The majority of Jotul problems I've seen have been caused by excessive burning with the ash pan door open. That is a great stove. The only downfalls I see with it are the fact that it's not a north/south loading stove and that it doesn't hold a large amount of wood. Those two things boil down to preference and the square footage you are looking to heat of course....

Sounds like a good deal, the class A will run you about 800-900 at shops, you're getting the F400 for less than half cost- that equates to a good deal to me. Congrats.

Agreed, half the time or more on an entire new system, the Class A system ends up costing more than a smaller stove.

So I just picked up my stove....it is not matte black it is like a silver color.... the guy said its Jotul iron... has anyone heard of this ?

Woohoo. Yes, I have seen the Jotul iron finish. It's very nice and distinctive. The fact that you got an enameled stove makes the deal even sweeter. Congratulations. Hope there will be pics to follow.

So the iron color finish is an enamel finish? I guess I didn't think its enamel.

Well its not like a flat black but it does not seem like a super gloss like the porcelain finishes. its like an eggshell or satin

Well, I remember Jotul Iron but it was for mainly the gas stoves. I do believe BG may be right, for the wood side, it could be enamel. It wasn't a common enamel color. Is the door handle chromed?? If so, that is enamel iron.

That sounds like enamel, but without the porcelain glaze. This is the same as my avatar's blue black enamel. It's a handsome and durable finish.

If memory serves, Iron enamel was a porcelainized finish (glossy). Blue black is the only "satin" finish that I know of, attained by not baking in 9 layers of paint to a porcelain finish, but instead 6 or 7 coats. That is also why blue black is the least expensive enamel finish. I do know its my favorite enamel color. Hearthstone makes a blue black satin finish also, its a dark blue-gray. Its very appealing as well.

I think the ivory is/was also available in non-majolica enamel, at least it was a few years ago, but not sure about the iron. That's a rare finish. If it's low gloss then I suspect it is also not majolica glazed. Searching on the interwebs I find some shops still listing iron enamel.

There is a stove bright iron paint available. They call it Jotul Iron....It is also a flat version, and is very very sexy. One of my faves. I like being able to re-paint. Enamel is pretty but can be finnicky

How so? I found the blue-black enamel to be almost bullet proof. Our 1980 Jotul 602's cranberry red majolica finish is still in very good condition too.

Agreed, the Blue Black available from Jotul has been the toughest enamel I've ever seen hands down. This includes Quadrafire, Enviro, Vermont Castings, other Jotul enamels and the list goes on and on. Jotul Blue Black is also beautiful. Some of them you look at them and they chip. I put new andirons, a brick retainer and a new brick set in a Quad Isle Royal the other day. It was the sahara color. It was missing enamel EVERYWHERE. It was also in spots that didn't really see typical abuse.

No the door handle is the same color and finish as the stove with a wooden knob.
