Using Stove Gasket on Thimble?

So my thimble is about .125" to .25" larger than the (crimped) end of the 8">6" adapter pipe that needs to go in there, and not perfectly round either. Would it be OK to line the thimble with a thick enough gasket to make the pipe fit good and tight?

I use rope gasket for my stove collar because it's a sloppy fit. No problems yet, been doing it for years.
