warped ash grate

James Guido, good imaging. If I had uniform warping like yours is showing, why not in the meantime just flip the casing over to see if it slowly returns to flat surface? Mines bent in multiple directions & feel it’s a permanent set. Unfortunately, there’s a good chance we have lower than optimum mix of materials within the casting resulting in uneven heating of the castings. Too bad the ash grates weren’t cast using round castings which are more stable with quality mixture of materials such as cast iron was usually made. There’s lots of 100 year old castings of parlor and potbelly stoves still around made with high quality castings with minimal defects. I wish I bought the two large railroad station pot belly stoves for my old cottage 30 years ago. They looked almost new.
i did flip the first grate when it warped, thinking the same, it'll warp-back to normal.
no such luck.
then when the replacement arrived and it warped as well, i just blamed it on the "world renowned" Jotul's "high quality cast iron".

I'm still using the 2nd warped grate and in case anyone is interested, no... it has not warped any further either way.

last note: if i live any longer than i should and in need to replace this contraption, it would never be with another jotul.

IDK about all Jotuls now or just that model, but it seems the Oslo v3 seems to have more than a reasonable share of problems. I saw some other thread somewhere where the new Oslo had some cracks or gaps or something between the castings. In that case the dealer came out and did thorough testing, replaced the stove under warranty because it was leaking in a way it should not have been.

My old 3 CB is pretty well built, though the internal iron fire backs or whatever they are called did eventually deteriorate. One cracked. While rebuilding, they were all so far gone that I broke them with a hammer, not hitting all that hard.

outside of the warped grate, this stove has operated very well.
a bit of a learning curve and a bit more maintenance from the old 1991 er 2 vermont castings defiant encore...

Pardon my "Not-to-be-inconsiderate" upcoming comment but: I am not a ******* rookie using a woodstove.
Hmmm, still bitter over the way the Crew got drummed out of the playoffs? 😉 I feel your pain. 😞
That said, the grate certainly got hot, no? The 1/4" holes could be a factor. I have one hole that size in the Keystone ash pan housing under the grate, and the difference in the glowing of the coals on the grate is noticeable when I cover or open that hole.

Baseball and my comment from 4 years ago has nothing to do with wood stoving.
If you’re looking for a pissing contest, you’ve come to the wrong place.

Talk to all the Jøtul people and all the so called experts on wood stoves that I have then you’ll understand (perhaps not).
The warped grate DOES NOT alter the function of the stove as I have stated previously many times.

Is there any way to close commenting on this thread or simply delete the whole damn thing…
Starting to think that people need something to talk about….
