Hi,

I was cleaning my stove glass with some kitchen paper and wet ash. I dropped some wet ash on the hearth and tried to wipe it off with a wet cloth. Now I have big smears of ash on the hearth that I cant seem to get off. I tried scrubbing lightly with a weak solution of water and washing up liquid, it seems to have helped a bit but not much.

Does anyone have any tips as to how i can clean this off?

The hearth is blue limestone, sealed with linseed oil.

Thanks
JC

I'd try using a white rubber ink eraser to see if you can simply rub it out.
If that doesn't work, I'd try a DRY stiff nylon bristle brush.
As a last resort, I'd try some Hydrogen Peroxide on a white Terry-cloth towel.
Wet the towel & let it sit on the smears. It may lift them off.
I'd test this method, tho, on a not so visible spot on the hearth, in case of discoloring...

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (follow the directions on the box).

They work wonders.

Thanks everyone, will try a regular eraser first. if no luck i'll order a Mr Clean eraser and see if it works its magic for me! I must have a dry nylon brush to try somewhere too.

Thanks again
