I thought it was a hard maple or some sort of Hickory. It's heavy, and it almost looks like walnut inside, but it's not walnut, AFAIK. At least not like any I've seen. I apologize for the lighting.

Mulberry or Osage Orange, but hard to tell in the odd light. Is the center orangish or yellowish in real life?

It's not Mulberry with that dark heartwood, and I'm pretty sure the camera is what's making it look yellow. Do you have anymore rounds you can take pictures of? It appears to be Black Walnut to me.

Are you using a webcam, or some form of flashless camera? If so, find a light source in your house as close to "white" as you can find to light those logs and take another pic. Or use your flash. Or if your cam is mobile take the logs outside when the sun is out and take a pic. Your light source needs to be close to true "white" in order to render proper color, which would really help.

Otherwise, that tight splintery texture reminds me of osage.

Oh yeah, your camera might have white balance or color balance settings which may or may not be obvious. So if you can find a feature called "scenes" or something similar with icons of a sun, moon, and light bulb, try the light bulb setting.

I'm going with Pignut Hickory but reserve the right to change my mind if new pics are posted.

I thought it was pignut from the start. I have Walnut in my stacks that look nothing like this. The lighting is due to the garbage lightbulbs Al Gore and Co demanded we use to save Mother Earth.

Here are some pics I just took:

Yeah, that looks a lot like wood I split today, which I think is hickory. Not sure what species I have though.

Oh yeah!!
Did you ever figure out that other stuff?
Light...heavy...dense spongy...hard soft?
Its amazing the color difference in the heartwood between the pics.

I thought it was pignut from the start.
The bark doesn't look like Pignut to me. Now that you've got good color on your pics, we need more end grain shots, more bark shots, and pics uploaded so that we can click 'em and look at BIG pics! ==c
