I don't really need more of it right now, gotta get more quick-dry stacked. But I wanted to keep in touch with this place. I scored a bunch of White Oak there last year. There's a new caretaker now and I want to stay on his radar, since about half the trees there are Whites. There are Reds, and some White Ash, but we'll be up to our arse in Ash if the borer gets here. This particular Red was leaning, and fell after a soaking rain and some wind. 30" DBH. I wanted to get two loads today but the first load kicked my arse, with the hand-splitting. Really didn't want to drag the splitter over there since it's about seven miles away.
Here is what was left after four loads. Down to the meaty trunk now.
You can see how quickly the surface moisture is evaporating at 80*, the first round is losing its red color, and the stuff on the trailer was surface-dry by the time I got home!

This is the fifth load; Dropped one load at the neighbor's in trade for some Red Maple.

The stack is three rows, four pallets total. With this trailer, and the final load tomorrow, it should be close to two cords, all told. There's more un-split Red Oak waiting in the background, not to mention three downers in the woods here. And the neighbor where I scored this Red, who I know, has got a leaner Black, 30"+, hung up on a busted-off White. Looks like I'll be getting the wood from that as well. Then on the way home, I passed a cleared lot that looks like it's got Cherry and White Oak... Help! Save me from myself!

That sure would help. Can't stack the trailer up very high, especially with wet Oak...don't want to kill the car any sooner than I normally kill one off. Just need the car right now, more useful to me overall than a truck would be. I don't get all that many scores, I cut mostly in the woods here. But I've got a lot of stoves to feed at various in-laws' homes now, so I'm grabbing more off-site...

Definitely splitting it down further, just don't have time to mess with it now. I had to split them down to the point where I could lift them, and that involved chipping off the edges of the big rounds in some cases. I'm becoming a fan of the medium-sized split. With the cat stove, you can cut the air way down so no need to try to make the stove burn slower with big splits.
My SIL ran across the pup at a place she was doing some work. Wife had been talking about getting a bigger dog, SIL said he was a Lab mix, so we took him sight-unseen. We just hope he doesn't get too huge; First vet that saw him, and the tech, said he looked like he might have some Great Dane in him! I'm hoping he's a Chihuahua mix. He's turning out to be a good pooch. Puppies always find ways to be less than perfect, though. He's about 5 months as near as we can figure...

Man, that sounds great. All I really need to do right now is get some of the dead standing Ash around here stacked, then I'll be caught up with the relatives for next season. I'll be able to pick and choose my days this summer, not roast out there on those hot ones (at least we didn't get the usual humidity here in So. IN last summer.) I want to keep stacking though to get ahead on everyone else too, not just me. Then I'll be in true maintenance mode.

It's all here except for a few branch rounds that I have to cut when I go back; I'm piling the brush...and getting a small Silver Maple I saw that is dead with the bark coming off. Could probably throw most of that in the stove today.

According to my four-legged assistant, I am an oppressive tyrant; I won't let him "recycle" the trash, eat my shoes, dig up the neighbor's vegetable garden or carry around cat poop or dead vermin in his mouth. Is that wrong of me?

Yeah, his feet are still kinda big; He hasn't grown into them yet. He uses those feet like hands. He's turning out to be a good one.
Yeah, getting six loads of that heavy stuff about killed me. I used the 8-pounder for a lot of it, but for the last couple of trailer loads, mixed in the Fiskars. It did well. I think that springy wet wood bounces the maul head out to some extent but the Fiskars knifed through it a little better.
I have seen a couple of Tulip Poplars bust off half way up, but not blowing over like the Red Oaks do...

Oh, yeah! While your chain is real sharp, it just eats through that wet stuff like nobody's business, pulling the saw down out of your hands.

Hauled 2 big truck loads to a fellow from church and then even though I said I wasn't bringing more home I just couldn't make myself drive home empty so I brought a big truck load of ash,cherry and red oak for myself this morning.

Yeah, I'll probably split that soft Maple down and use it for starter wood over there in the 91. I like to get a hot core of burning wood going in the center of a reload, so the cat kicks off quick. Since I tweaked that air intake, stove seems to be running in the optimum temp range better, with less concern about cat temp getting high.

Heh-heh. I don't seem to be able to stop yet, either. I'm eying some wood in a cleared lot that's only about 1.5 miles away from the house. Looks like some Cherry and White Oak. 1) Close, 2) White....gotta make a play for that. May give that guy a call tonight. I asked about a couple other scores, but struck out...probably just as well. Before the rain started last night, I picked a wheelbarrow's worth out of that last trailer load, smaller Maple and Mulberry rounds with the bark off. It's going straight in the stove, cutting out a couple of wood-handling steps.
