Yes. I heard the flapper (air inlet door) just close in that small movement and I think right there is the largest sensitivity.
It'll modulate around this point, one can heat the stove temp changing sometimes when the thermostat changes.

Load of red oak and one maple split this morning. 24 outside.
On a work trip yesterday so loaded stove before I left with oak and cherry. Furnace running when I got back at 7pm.

The Inglenook would be OK I think... Lots of different discussions about random things there.
I got home last night about 8 and dealt with the charcoal. I shoveled a 3 gallon bucket full of smokin hot goodness out. Damn near set myself on fire getting to the back of the box. Ran some small pine and then dropped in 2 6" splits of yellow pine. Man those guys gas out, cats were at 1500 in 15 minutes. About midnight loaded oak.
As hot as the remnants of the pine was it took me some time to calm the girl down. It's not often I'm happy to have a key damper but I was happy it was there last night.
Woke up this morning to a nice coal bed and tossed 2 more of the big yellow pine splits in and she is winding up nicely.
Waiting for the storm to land soon. They are calling over 12 on the peaks of our ridge. The ice line seems to be holding just south in N GA. With that and the temps coming up from 15 at midnight to 27 right now we may be seeing up for a real snow today.

Perfection this morning! 9 1/2 hours after loading next to no haze on the glass, 67 upstairs, 68 downstairs, nice coals but not too much. Firing up & burning down the coals a little bit, then I think I will go 3/4 hardwood load.
We had a low of 8.5 this morning, the basement temp started out at 73 with the temps up here cooler, both temps were 65.
I didn't set the furnace last night but while I was burning down some coals, I turned that on. The first load today was five splits of maple.
We still have plenty of beech inside but today we'll be putting in more of what was maple the last time we put some in from that stack.
It looks like today will be another day on the tractor, I have some areas that will need plowing, especially near the outside fireplace.

All hail the ghost flames! I love watching them dance. That’s a hot cat when you see that.

Love watching the ghost flames in the second video . But it’s the off gassing in the first video that always gives me an uncomfortable feeling.
And those were taken within 3 minutes of each other, showing the control this stove offers.
That is the benefit of a cat stove; primary (only) air can be closed more because the cat will clean things up - leading to more control against runaway.
EPA allows for lower minimum air and that allows to shut things down when needed (or wanted).

So, last night's 9.30 load is done. 40 outside now, 30 low overnight, so a 17 hr burn. 71 upstairs.
Raked the coals evenly to the front, put two pine splits left and right (first!), two oak shorties in the middle, two more pine on top and an oak stick.
Funny the oak in the middle started burning first. Of course the pine takes off faster, but having both at 16% or less (4.5 year old oak, 1 year old pine) then I think the surface roughness is more important in take off speed: the oak had more loose fibers than the pine.

Love the low and slow functionality of my cat stove.I gotta say, I like yellow pine. I've been burning 4-6" splits 2 at a time ago day and I'm impressed. It lays big hot coals and the cats never dropped under 1200. Stove temps hovered around 400 with the loads 3 hours apart.
To bad I have so much white pine dead stand to deal with.

Anybody ever try red pine? Curious..... I never have. Just white so far.
I think Scotch pine is in the red family?
I have a bunch of red and white growing here at home. I want some of the reds down and all the whites. The whites are bordering my neighbors angus pasture. I want to protect that fence and keep the bulls where they belong. They're always dropping branches. Not only that, there are a hand full of baby spruce underneath along with a bunch of ash saplings. They all need room to grow. Also glad the ash are replenishing themselves.

Reload with mostly pitch pine and some red oak shorties.
Didn't fit well, so a partial load. Enough to sleep in tomorrow before going to rock climbing with my daughter.

5 ash, 2 beech, 1 sugar maple and a nice big ironwood round tonight.
The outside temp tonight is 15.6, the basement temp is starting out at 77 with the temps up here 68 & 69. The overnight load has five beech splits with two maple.
The Dragon's breakfast was at 6am. Nice load of ash, sugar, cherry, and apple. I fed 8 splits on top of last night's oak load to coals. The GF had the day off so I figured 8 should be good till noon. Left for work at 7am. GF hasn't been feeling that great and slept on the couch today. I got home around 2:30 to a cold firebox and house. The Dragon missed lunch. I removed some ash to find some hot embers, coals and some cold coals. Stirred it all up and threw some air at them. 10-15mins later they were all a glow. Ash and soft maple was a good appetizer for a reload of the same breakfast diet. Total splits were around a dozen. Not long after that, an early supper of red oak dead wood from today's job score. All 3-4'' in diameter along with a couple scraps. The dead limb wood burst into flame almost instantly. Around 9 she got another load of ash, sugar, and cherry. The usual 8 splits of my mixed hardwood stash. With the lows in the low 20s, I'll be feeding another round of dead oak limbs and mixed hardwoods to fill the voids. Should be good till morning.
Loaded with smaller splits and shorties of oak and elm. Lots of surface area for off gassing. 700STT hearing the main floor up. Did not have afire last night so catching up heating the house up. 28 and light snow.
