What Is In Your Stove Right Now?

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We strive to provide opinions, articles, discussions and history related to Hearth Products and in a more general sense, energy issues.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
I forgot to mention, attorney encouraged me to buy a HO insurance policy of my own. I wanted to do this last spring. Since their policy is seasonal with no woodstove allowed, I'll be able to run my mighty Moe with our own policy.

Not sure why but yesterday's 8 pm load of maple and oak that was not very tetris-suitable, is only done now. It was very windy and cold today.
32 now with a real feel of 23. Upstairs has been 70 all night and day .
Adding two oak ugly shorties to get me past the school concert of my son for a reload.

Burning some soft maples in with some red oak and couple splits of beech. The beech is so ready for burning. Sat stacked for 2 seasons. Going down to the mid teens tonight. Working up that overnight coal bed. What a big belly.

Ran out of my fuzzy cardboardy square thing wax firestarters and got a bag of fatwood. Used one stick and it started up the fire way easier than the other firestarters did. I’m definitely a fan.

Load of red oak in. 32 out real feel of 17, 68 in the stove room.

Craziest and most disturbing weather here. We have only had 3 fires so far this year. Temps are often in the mid 50's - in mid December. I was working outside yesterday in a sweatshirt when the rain stopped. I can't remember a start to winter like this. Lots of rain right now and warm in the mountains. Not good for skiers or snowpack that we depend upon.

This east coast is making up for it. Seems like we’re in for another old fashioned winter. Cold cold cold and it’s early Dec. oak/hard maple in the house for tonight!

Quite the opposite in the northeast!

I was just playing waiter to the dragon. The appetizer soft maples are down to coals and the oak was in split form but coaling. Beech splits were chunky coals. Added more white and red mighty oak, and some split beech shorts. One big hungry girl.

They’re saying a warm the middle of next week, we’ll have to hang up the parka and grab the shorts… for a few days?
Hang up the oak and grab the spruce 👍🏼

We had 11 out this morning, the basement was 72 with the temps up here 67 & 68. A load of ash went in the Liberty before I went outside.

The wife had a fire or two while I was out, tonight will be five splits of beech.

20’s here and we had some wind gust up to 50 today. Good wind chill. Loaded some Ash E/W and some large Oak chunks N/S. Turned down air quickly with the strong draft. House 74 now. Cold start to the winter this year. Cleaned the glass for the first time today. The Vista has a great air wash system.

29 feels as 21, going down to 24 tonight. Upstairs 70.
Reload of oak and maple. Again wasn't done before the flames started. Dang 4-5 year old wood... Looking forward to getting back on 3 years fuel next year.

-6/67 full load of Red Oak this morning. The temp has been rising this morning as a little snow moves in then temps are supposed to pummel with nasty wind chills.

I've been burning the Fireview pretty hot in the morning at a little over #1 air setting. Full load gives me about 5 hours of good heat to get the cabin temps back up over 70. Once up to temp I can back off some to maintain temps. It will be a good test this weekend for the Fireview.

We're at 17 and supposed to drop all day to -15 tonight. Last night's load was very effective and still have a ton of coals. Inside temperature is still 70 in the back hall and 71 in the Great Room, so I separated ash and embers from the coals and opened the air up to remove it in a while to prepare for the deep freeze. First load today will probably be pine, aspen, black ash and maybe a little cherry.

Yesterday afternoon I did a mixed hardwoods load of oak and hard maple. This morning I added 7 splits of Norway spruce on top of the coals for the daytime load. House 72 and climbing I believe it’s still 32 out with some wind.

The maple and oak of last night is done. A few oak uglies to get me to tonight.
32 outside and a bit windy. Sunny tho.
Upstairs 70.

20’s and windy. Had a really hot cold start this morning 750 STT with mostly oak. Try not to run it that hot but warmed up the house quick which was 64 in the main floor. Reloaded with Birch and stringy knotty Elm. House 74.

I've been using the fatwood for years. It's good stuff! I buy in bulk from a company on ebay.

Yes, so my SIL reminds us. 51º today. Forecast is for 60º by Monday, then a cooling trend later in the week. We need to get the snow level down to a more normal 3000-4000' at this time of year to build up the snowpack. There's been lots of flooding, but little snow except above 7,000'.
