So here are the 2 stoves that I am currently looking at:

This one is ready for install and won't take a lot of hearth modification to meet the manuals requirement.

Seems that Avalon is a well liked proven brand.

Not real sure of the brnd of this one. The last e-mail the guy sent me stated it was a warnack hershey which as far as I know is a certifier and not a builder. Can anyone identify it? Osburn?

Trouble is that it needs a surround and I'm not sure of the hearth requirements yet. I'm thinking that purchasing a surround and modifying a hearth I could be up to the price of the other Avalon stove pretty quick. Any help is appreciated as a new insert is not in my budget at this time.

What are you installing this insert in? Prefab or masonry? What is the current fireplace hearth?

Here is the link to a post with my fireplace pics:

It is a masonry fireplace. Current hearth is 18"wide covered in cermic tile and flush with floor and firebox. The substrate under 4" of the tile is solid masonry extending all the way to the basement floor. The remaining 14" looks to have a 2" substrate of masonry under the tile. I just chipped a piece of grout out and dug down to inspect what was underneath and this was the best I could determine.

Do you know for sure that you have enough room to install the Avalon with the rear flue without extending your hearth? You might end up with hearth mod costs anyway if it has to sit out from the back of the fireplace.

If the stove in question is a Enviro they pretty much have similiar hearth requirements so that modification is a wash. I'm pretty sure either will fit. Main concern is the enviro has no trim surround and by the time I purchase one of them (if they can be had) am I better off getting the Avalon.
