I've been using a VC Vigilant from the early 1980s (1977 casting) for 15 years and I'm now about to replace it with a modern stove. Our house & stove use was comfortable with the Vigilant, so I thought that'd be a good clue as to what size of stove to replace it with. In particular, the PE Summit (rated at 99,000 BTU max) and PE Super 27 ( rated at 72000 BTU max) are the current favorites.

Any idea what the modern day BTU rating for the Vigilant would be? That'd help in my decision.

Thanks

The Vigilant was rated with a max heat output of 50,000 BTU/hr.. Take new stove output ratings with a grain of salt. There are many ways to test a stove. Some companies provide conservative output ratings and others may list a rating that would require one to stoke the stove like a locomotive.
