Looking for feedback on whether anyone is getting water in the gravel or sand at the bottom of the fire pit even with the cover on? Condensation?

Bought it about a month ago and only used it once. Took off the cover which goes completely to the ground and is on a slate patio. I had previous heard gravel is better to use than sand.

Gravel was all wet as if the cover was never used...guess condensation?

Should pavers be used in the bottom of a fire pit instead of gravel or sand?
