What to put on ceiling inside fireplace?

I have built a new fireplace using 2x4 studs and construction, then inside the firebox area is 1/2 inch thick (2 layers thick on the floor). It then has hearth stones with stone on the walls. It has the same Durock on the ceiling inside the fireplace. What else should I put on the ceiling? Will the layer of Durock be enough or what?

It will have a set of gas logs put inside of it. It is a ventless log set

What are the requirements of the gas log set? Most require a woodburning fireplace or a listed cabinet. You have neither. You have nowhere near enough masonry to protect the wood.

It needs to be in a woodburning fireplace or a ul listed ventfree cabinet. You cant put it in that space.

An electric logset is probably the only thing that would be safe in there and even that is questionable you would have to check their manuals.

Never do ventless to start with. Vented only in my book anyway. For what you have bholler is right, get yourself and electric unit and put it in there.

I agree totally. I would never have a ventless unit vented into my house.
