Burning Hunk

I am wondering what others want for Christmas to help with processing wood for burning. My husband wants several things, one is a wedge to use for cutting down trees, that helps the tree fall away from the wedge. He also wants a Cant Hook. But I don't know anything about either of these items. ME, I'd like a giant wood chipper, lol.

Please share your ideas, thanks!

I just bought a wood chipper and love it. It's the Woodmaxx 1260. Chews up anything you can stick in it and makes the most perfect confetti out of everything too small to be firewood. We use the chips as walkway mulch. It's great to walk on and doesn't hurt your feet.

For the wedge, I've been using these plastics and they work great. Get four so you can use some to rescue the others if necessary.
10" version for the big trees
5" version for smaller trees

Cant help with the hook though. I don't use 'em.

Edit: Well I read your post wrong. I thought you wanted ideas on where/what to get to fill his order. Color me stupid!
To answer your post right, I have to say "a new skid steer". That's all I want for Christmas and Santa can't seem to find one that isn't a fortune.

Madsens in chehalis Washington has a good online assortment of wedges and such. They ship globally and are very good to do business with. I’d say a minimum of three wedges. 2 @ 8” smooth and one @ 10” smooth. The small and a big to start, once the tree is lifted and the smaller is in all the way, the bigger is pounded in to free up the smaller, then the two smaller can be stacked to continue. A little sawdust sprinkled in between helps keep them from popping out but always a good idea to keep the larger snugged in as you go. I would advise also not to show him the website as there are a lot of things that might appear on next year’s wish list that aren’t as cheap

I have been looking at the LogOX 3 in 1 tool. Also like getting toe warmers to put in my boots for those really cold days. Bigger tractor would be nice too....

Husqvarna combi fuel can (gas/oil mix on one side and bar oil on other)... about $63... might have to order from Amazon and Ebay because it's an orange color, not red as what is required by USA regs.

A pickeroon, hookeroon, axeroon, whatever you want to call it. There are various styles, cost $75 and up.

TopSaw multi-tool for chainsaws, about $20... Amazon product ASIN B00HSLXUT2

Wedges... 3-4 for $20 to $30.

Wedge holder you put on your belt... I have one that is made of fabric and wasn't much, less than $20.

I've asked for a new pair of chainsaw chaps, a new pair of work pants (looking at the Firehose Flex line from Duluth Trading Co), and a new pair of suspenders to hold up said work pants.

Not wood related but... Ammo. Specifically 9mm flavor :)

Another x27 as my oldest son can wield an axe now....so with both of us splitting, we could make short work of the woodpile in no time flat. Also, some new gloves, a new chainsaw [20" bar], a coffee roaster, a new holster, & some ammo also. We will see what Mrs. Santa does...

If truth be none All I want for Christmas is to be with my
family and well after the heart surgery that I will have in 2 days
I hope everything goes well with your operation and you'll spend Christmas with your family.

These are all great ideas for Santa!

@GadDummit, I was also thinking of ideas from others, so you were on the right track. Thanks for the wedge pointers too. and to @Nealm66 for the website for wedges.

If he has a saw and cuts trees, chainsaw chaps and chainsaw helmet are the best gift you can give especially for someone unfamiliar with using chainsaws. Chainsaw gloves which have a kevlar pad in the back of the glove are also a another safety tool. Chainsaw injuries happen quick and the damage done is major.

With respect to wedges, make sure they are plastic as its easy to catch a wedge with chainsaw blade which usually ruins the chain. Instead of a standard cant hook, there are versions with a log lifter, the lifter gets logs up off the ground to make sawing easier and keeps the blade out of the ground (it keeps the chains sharper longer). https://www.homedepot.com/p/Earth-W...g-Lifter-with-Wood-Handle-HWD630030/308599728. It still works as cant dog by removing the arm.

I am lucky as I have logging supply store in my town that manufactures US made cold weather logging gear. Their insulated nylon pants are practically indestructible (broken link removed to https://www.labonville.com/Insulated-Black-Nylon-Pants-W-Snaps-WN600P_p_73.html). I find that most folks prefer using suspenders with them. They do ship. They can be equipped with safety pads that work like chainsaw chaps but have less coverage so I stick with chaps on top of mine.

im considering a wood turning lathe so i can turn some of my rounds into wooden bowls. I also took up wood carving recently, making some of my branch pieces into wooden spoons and spatulas . Something to do over the winter months.

I would not fire up the chain saw if I didn't have a cant hook. I like them so much, I have two of them. My brother and I had to roll a 24 inch white oak trunk, 12 feet long, impossible without the cant hooks.

And if you aren't rolling the log you are going to trash your chain by cutting into the dirt.

One exception you may not be familar with in NC , wait until there is good depth of snow and drop the trees on the snow. No need to worry about dulling a blade cutting into snow. I get pretty good with chainsawing on snowshoes but people wonder why my cuts are 3 or 4 feet off the ground ;) The trees usually are pretty well supported by the snow so its pretty rare to pinch a bar. I can usually buck up the entire length of the trunk without pinching a bar if the snow conditions are right I usually let it just sit there bucked and haul it out in the spring.

First My surgery was cancelled 3rd time. I would like to thank all those that offered prayers.
My spirit is now broken they have no idea when they will fit me in. My health is deteriorating before my eyes and this may be my last Christmas. My only blessing is that I get to spend it with my wife of 42 years my sones there wives and my 6 beautiful Grand Children. I wish you all very Merry Christmas and all the best in the new year

THIS IS RIGHT ON THE NOSE. .......READ IT SLOWLY... I DON'T KNOW WHO WROTE IT, BUT I AM GUESSING IT WAS A SENIOR!!! I FIRST STARTED READING THIS AND WAS READING FAST UNTIL I REACHED THE THIRD SENTENCE. I STOPPED AND STARTED OVER READING SLOWER AND THINKING ABOUT EVERY WORD. THIS IS VERY THOUGHT-PROVOKING. MAKES YOU STOP AND THINK.
AND THEN IT IS WINTER You know. . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.
It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?
I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change....Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.
Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit!
And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!
But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's NOT over. A new adventure will begin!
Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.
So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!
Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!
"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.
LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY! HAVE A GREAT DAY!
REMEMBER:....
"It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.
"LIVE HAPPY IN THIS YEAR AND EVERY YEAR!
LASTLY, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE SO - ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS.
~Your kids are becoming you.......
~Going out is good.. Coming home is better!
~You forget names.... But it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!!
~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything
~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore.
~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep".
~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch..
~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... "what?" . ???
~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.
~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!!
~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.
~Everybody whispers.
~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear.
~But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS!!
Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!" Send this on to other "Old Friends!" and let them laugh in AGREEMENT!!!
It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived.

Well said John even if you're not the original author. I and my family will continue to send prayers for you.

I know some of the fellows here would call me a pup, but 50 is fast approaching and I have been spending more time reflecting. What is enough atonement for my younger years? Is there enough? There's always more that I could have done... The cabin build we've talked about for years is finally about to get started, but is it too late? Ahhh... the connondrom of life and mortality...

John, I don't know you, and you don't know me - but no worries, we simply never met.

I'll be thinking of you these days. I hope that in this winter you'll feel the warmth of old friends, close family, and, hopefully a wood fire that you or someone close will maintain for you.
