Whats this in my Oslo?

Take a look at what I found in the ash, the yellow color stuff. I saw it last weekend, and thought it came off the wood. Cleaned the ash, and again this weekend I find the same thing in the same spot, only in this spot. It's soft, almost like ash. The picture is from the outside of the side door, looking down onto the stove floor.

My guess, so far is it's the insulation behind the burn plate on the side door. I can't see in there without taking the plate off. And I don't want to disturb the plate until I stop burning for the year.

Any other ideas what this is?

Bart, Why do you say that? It's had to tell in the picture , maybe 3/4 inch deep on the floor. I get that in 2 days. Although this picture is from my wife burning all week. I normally clean the stove before each weekend burn. But 2 days or a week the ash is the same.

Strange colors happen -I believe it to be caused by minerals in the wood. Some trees suck up some strange stuff and when burnt it has different colored ash. I have seen similar and other colors from time to time.

Depending on when you purchased your Oslo it may have the skamol baffle. Look up next time you open the door and see if that is chipped and dropping pieces into your firebox. The color is very close to what you have in the picture.

Like Bob was say'in. Your are probably burning some splits from the same tree that had sucked up some silica or something.

Be interesting to see what you figure out in the long run, but I'm wagering it's just wood ash. I get all manner of colors in the ash now and then. I don't see how it is insulation if it is "ash-like," soft and fluffy and etc.

I have no experience with the Oslo, but my first wild guess was "I wonder if he is missing a little bit of his baffle/insulating blanket".

I would look up and see if something looks frayed/missing.

If not, then I would check the door as you said (after burning season).

If it is neither of those, then you have a funny colored ash

The stove is 13 years old with the cast iron burn plates. Never saw anything like this stuff. strange how it ended up in the exact location 2 weeks in a row. I like the idea of silica in the wood. The ash although not fully burned, shoulder season the last few days. Although I'm anal about having a clean stove, it holds the relighting charcoals better when there is a bed of ash.

Id be interested to see the answer to this. Were you burning really hot or just smouldering? If I had to guess i'd would say its a coincidence with something in the wood you are burning. I have been working with a tree lopper for the last few weeks and its amazing what you find deep within the trunks of trees....metals, plastics etc...junk that has been caught up as the tree has grown around it...
