Which Paint to use. Stove Bright? Flat Satin Metallic?

Hi folks, first time poster here, been reading for a few weeks since I've decided to heat with wood.

I'm going to paint a used cast iron (not porcelain) VC Resolute Acclaim and have been looking at stove bright brand paint, but had no idea there were so many color and sheen choices.


I think I like the idea of having a bit of sheen, so I favor the Satin Black over the Flat Black, but just how shiny is the satin? Have any of you used it?


And what about the metallic black. Is it satin sheen as well? Which is more shiny between metallic black and satin black?


I also noticed thurmalox has a clear gloss stove paint for top coating other stove paints. That sounds like you could approach a porcelain look. Wonder how durable it would be?


Anyone with experience with these products I would appreciate your feedback.

Sorry for not being able to comment on many of your questions, but I will share my experience.

2 winters ago I painted my stove with Rustoleum High Heat Stove Black (Spray) and it came out great. About 1 month into the fire season I noticed that every time I touched the stove I was covered in black. Also found that the paint began turning white in the hottest spots of the stove.

This winter, went through the hassle of completely and thoroughly cleaning the stove and this time used the brush on Rustoleum High Heat paint. The results this time are perfect.

Not sure if I got a bad can, but all I can say is the stove looks the way it should now with the brushed on paint.

If your Acclaim was black from the factory, it's satin..Stovebrite Satin black will may it look spiffy!

Satin black is not quite matte & it's not too shiny...I've used it on probably more than 100 units, both for touch-up & total repaint...

And what about the metallic black. Is it satin sheen as well? Which is more shiny between metallic black and satin black?

If you take a look at ANY of the Regency wood or gas products, they're painted Metallic Black...
It has little sparkly thingies in it, so I guess it'd be considered shiny...More so than Satin...
The nice thing about the metallis, IMHO, is that when used for minor touch-ups, it blends very nicely...
Sometimes with the Satin Black, you've gotta paint the whole stove to make it look good...
Either way you go, your stove's gonna smoke for the first 20 minutes of burn time...Non-toxic, but noticeable...you'll hafta open a window or two

Whatever color/finish you choose, be sure to paint the stove with an organic vapor mask on in an area with lots of ventilation. Stove Brite paints are good, but they will rot brain cells quickly if you don't take they label warnings seriously.

Do not use Stove Brite paint on top of DeRusto High Temp paint.

I used the metallic on my Olympic and it looks just fine - flat-ish.

I too had the same problem with the rustoleom turning white on my stove in the hot spots so I would not reccomend it, plus its too flat I think. The stove bright I've heard is good but pretty expensive. I have touched up a few things with valspar woodstove paint (from TSC) and I like the color and the gloss of it, seems just right. I will be repainting my stove this summer with that.

The Quad units have a metallic black. Looks awesome. I like it even better when I repaint and entire stove because there is more metal flake then from the factory. We use the Stove bright paint. I repainted a few stoves in the fall that we sold, I have not heard any complaints from the customers so I assume all is well.

That Stove Bright is some nasty stuff, but it's the best. Fairly expensive too, but in the end result is worth it.

Yeah Stove Bright is great paint but is acetone based so a good mask and tons of ventilation is mandatory. Using it in the house is not advised. In fact I discourage it mightily.
