Youngest brother and family came for a short visit recently. I believe he thought I just sat around since I'm retired..........until he saw the stacks.
Possibly changed his attitude.

He's got two years on me, but I passed him up a month agoI surpassed that mark about 6 years ago.

I read that it is good to get out in October or November to gather the winter's firewood. So I have the saw ready to go. I hope it has time to dry.
I'm good to go for at least 3 yrs but I had to grab a blow over red oak - split it off the truck and reloaded it a couple days ago - reminded me why I don't mess with wood piles this time of year as I found a 4ft king snake that wasn't too pleased to have his new home disturbed...that's the last of wood gathering until the temps get a bit cooler(60 this morning and 92 this afternoon)
Well, I started burning last year, and had about 1 cord of wood dry enough to burn. It didn`t last the winter, so I`ve spent all year cutting dry standing pine, spruce and whatever to get me through this winter. I figure I have 6 cords of that. I`ve also started ccs`ìng for 14/15 and have perhaps 3 cords there. With arthritis in the knees, and a bad back, I don`t get to choose which days I cut.
I know you are joking Dennis, but there are a few of us that live in beetle kill lodgepole pine country that can get away with it. You Eastern kids, don't go trying this at home.

We have the spruce beetle here out east. Same thing, I guess, as in BC.

We have spruce beetle here too, and I have burned the dead spruce infected trees before but they don't seem to be as consistently dry as the beetle killed lodgepole pine. Not too mention the spruce are a pain to split and they have far fewer BTUs.
I was done in early May splitting and stacking the last of it for this winter and also have half of next year ready to go. Ive been collecting a bit here and there for fun and will get more as space permits on my small chunk of dirt. My lodgepole pine that was cut green by the city in November of last year and split and stacked by me the same day is ready to go now. I picked up a bit of cherry that I split and stacked so it should be fun burning something new next year. Frost a couple of times so far, might not be long now....
I'm at 13+ cords and still bringing it in. That puts me close to 3 years up. I have 2 more (cord) permits for lodgepole, which will expire at the end of the year if I don't use them. The state just dropped a bunch more trees along the highway. That permit (unlimited quantity) expires the end of this month. Will be taking advantage while I can. The thing I like about being ahead is you can afford to be an opportunist. Take the wood when it's easy and available, avoid the end of season rush. Last year I was still cutting after it snowed. As God is my witness, I will never again!
Agreed! Big spruce is a pain to split. We also have ash beetle, and lots of ash are standing dead trees. The ash seem to be better trees to css than the spruce. They are just more dangerous to fell when they`ve been dead for a few years.
Close to 16 cords, about 4 years ahead, but NEVER done (at least that's what I keep saying to my wife/kids LOL

I'm still splitting, but its for 2015-2016. This years wood was felled by Sandy, and split last Thanksgiving. I've only 2 years in at this property, so just starting to get ahead.
Funny thing about the wife's yard sale yesterday.....people kept complimenting on the stack of wood we have.....and I ended up getting TWO MORE tree removal jobs, thanks to the stacks in the backyard!!
Reality is setting in on me in my first year of processing my own wood. I think I'll have to buy a cord this year because I don't think I have enough wood that's seasoned yet. The good news is that's a few less cords than I had to buy last year AND hopefully I'll be self-sufficient next year!

I forgot to mention this little "funny" story (sad for the lady it happened to though). My wife asked me to take my truck and log trailer (which is filled up with (5) 20' logs at the moment) out of the driveway and park it over against the farm field, out of the way, so people could park in the driveway for the yard sale. So I did. it was over 10' off of the lane, clear out against the field, WAAAAY far away from our house. Well, a little old lady drove CLEAR OUT THE LANE from our house to turn around for some reason or another, and backed her late model buick RIGHT INTO THE TAILLIGHT BRACKET ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE TRAILER! Ripped the bumper cover wide open on her car, and smashed the pass. side wheelwell and rear door in......probably around 3-4k in damage to her car, and she was worried about that little 5 dollar taillight on my trailer. Poor woman was an absolute wreck....I genuinely wanted to cry FOR her....
Anyway, no matter how hard you try sometimes, chit happens........

20 cords here, good for 4-5 winters. Never done splitting though - already have more lined up to get when it gets cooler.

I like how Scotty whited out the license plate. Doesn't want us scroungers finding the promised land, where as legend has it you can see stacks of wood as far as the eye can see

Ya, that is from the Old Farmer's Almanac. We certainly won't be cutting in October and burning the same wood that year. Out in your area, for sure that lodgepole pine can do wonders for you.
