Ok, I got a new Extech moisture meter that will promptly go back on Monday because it was advertised falsely. Grainger has it listed as reading from 0-100%. It specifically states in the manual that it does not measure mc in percentage, rather it is a relative measurement with an approximate conversion scale you can use. I really wanted to get a pinless type but they didn't have any in stock and I was very impulsive this afternoon.
Anyway, the meter is good for a relative and repeatable comparison so what I did was measure a piece of kiln dried cherry lumber that has been in my basement for over a year. It measures a 1. I split a piece of red oak that threw a bucket of water out when it sp-lit, it measures 110.
Here is what my woodpile measures: Standing dead ash that had no bark on it anywhere, c&s;2 months ago measures a 1. Standing dead locust with no bark, c&s;1 month ago measures 22. C&S;cherry that was green 2 months ago measures 28. Green Hackberry that was c&s;1.5 months ago measures about 45. Green Oak c&s;2 months ago measure s 70. Green Mulberry that was c&s;1.5 months ago measures 90.
I really wanted to burn the Mulberry this year, but I don't think its going to happen. I won't get into the oak until sometime in Jan. I have lots of seasoned Ash, Sweetgum, and Locust to hold me over. I have about 17 cords in the backyard and soon should be 2 years ahead.
