Wood I.D. please...

We had a heavy freezing rain Tuesday night. Wednesday morning there were cracks and booms all over the place from trees and tree limbs of all sizes coming down in the woods on my property and the surrounding neighborhood. A woodcutter's time to harvest!

This giant limb/trunk came down in a neighbor's yard and went across the road. So it had to be cut up just for us to drive through no matter what. The property owner knows most of the tree types close to his house very well, but not this one as this was on the far edge of what he owns and was amongst a heavily wooded area that he never goes into.

I'm guessing oak from the bark and the tight circles. I cut all rounds at 18" length. The largest are heavy and took two of us to get in the pickup bed. My crappy axe didn't get any response out of a 12" diameter round, so three swings got the one in the last pic.

Good guess, Red Oak.

Red oak has a great aroma when cutting or splitting. Its some kind of oak for sure. The proof's in the smell.

10000% chestnut oak. one of my favorites. splits soooo easy.

I was kinda wondering if it was a chestnut oak type. But I cant see enough bark. I was thinking Chinkapin. This is my favorite group only because I love the trees.
