It is a young silver maple grown on high ground on the west side of a hill with rocky territory. It appears to have been 22" DBH with a 28' crown.

Just a guess though.>>

So what ever became of the outcome of this dilemma? We have to help this fella out.....
 
It looks like Quaking Aspen.

Some of those splits have that torn look to them.
 
I still have no idea what it is. I'll use some of it for shoulder season in the spring maybe. Whatever it is, it's not great wood. I have 7 cords of oak sitting for this winter, can't wait til it starts to cool off. My labs & I sleeping in front of the stove after a duck or pheasant hunt is just about my favorite thing in the world
