The big, thick furrowed bark, broken into short, vertical sections always makes me think cottonwood. Fairly heavy when wet, but would blow away in a stiff wind when dry.

It doesnt quite look like what I cut last fall. It might be Black cottonwood, as apposed to Eastern Cottonwood.
I also thought the bark was cottonwood but those are some pretty tight growth rings. I are confuddled.
Ash, we always called it brown ash(never looked it up). Around here it typically grows in wetter locations. Wack it with a maul, I bet it flies apart.

Black Ash, that would explain the tight rings and the look, Ive seen some other postings where people have stated they had Ash. I didnt believe it.

No...Not Black cottonwood, not in PA range. No search for Ash came up with that bark. I thought there was an Ash with super thick bark like that but nothing came up. There is a Black Ash but bark doesnt match.
Sourwood is another thick bark tree.

That dark heartwood makes me think Black Walnut, and the bark isn't too far from Black Walnut, but it don't think it is quite right. I don't know what it is.
Sticking with Black/Brown ash..Lol.. Can't find any online pictures to back it up, but I've seen it.. have you split any yet?
It DOES have a pinhole in the center like Ash does...I've never seen any Ash that looks like that but we'll find out! Split a round open and see if it has any aroma to it....

Did you take a blade to the end of one of the rounds? It looks like a hardwood, but I'm not sure which. Using a knife, or even your fingernail you can distinguish a quality hardwood from a soft. Are the split pieces in your other thread from the same tree, or different?

I looked at the entire tree today, and I believe it's an ash. The higher up the tree, the more recognizable it was, I'm almost certain it is some sort of ash.
Sometimes the rays are really hard to see, if you can even see them at all. But no, I don't think it's Oak either.
