I don't have much to work with. Never saw the tree. Got a bunch of black birch for free and there was 8 or so logs like this. It smells bad. Almost like horse piss. I'm in Southern New England.

It resembles ash, sort of, but ash doesn't smell like that.
 
I've split a ton of ash and this is not ash. Could be elm I've never split it but I know there is some around. Thanks
