Wood to Gas, Back to Wood ???

My house has been in the family for some time, so I know it is a wood fireplace. My stepfather added gas in the late 90's. My big question is weather it is a gas starter line or not. There is no ignition source or flex tubing for heat radiation issues.

turn the valve for the gas to be on, then ignite with long match (sometimes we would ignite paper first then turn the gas on)

I think Cracker Barrel has something like this to get the wood burning. Last time I was in there he had wood on the grate and threw a match and it lit......I know the wood wasn't that dry! Lol
