Clean the gap as best possible before cementing. I suggest getting a tube or two of Hearthstone's fiber-based cement. It's meant for stone.

I wonder if a thick bore syringe could get the cement down into the crack and you could pump enough in to seal.

That's the idea with a caulking gun. They sell the Hearthstone cement in caulking tubes and tubs. That should fill the gap.

A caulk gun works great as long as you take the air duct baffle out. It’s tough getting to it through the door but it’s doable. I just used a tube of Red Devil furnace cement I had to patch it. I’ll get the good stuff this Summer and redo it right unless this keeps being an issue.
