I started up on filling the softwood area back up with pine, this pine is for the year 2026 - 27.

I started off with the worst stuff from a damaged tree from last year and then got into the better storm damage pine from this spring or late winter. The front stack was done today, over 1 face cord.

Wind blew one of my stacks over a few weeks ago, today I finally got to re-stacking it. It was about 3 pallets long, and about 5-1/2’ tall. After that I stacked about pallet of box elder and some pine, and half a pallet of oak.

I also burned some punky wood from that log drop in the outside firepit, then raked my split area and dumped the bark / small scraps on the fire.

Need to catch up on splitting this week, my tree buddy said he’s got plenty of free wood if I want it… I just need a place for him to drop it.

I hear ya about the space... I'm going to try to give away at least 4-6 cord of aspen and pine logs because I have so much down and won't be able to process and store it before it rots.

Good problem to have… but problem nonetheless! I’m probably only a 1/2yr ahead right now, so I’d be figuring out how to stack or buck all that up and get it off the ground.

Right, but I'm making sure that once the pole shed is up and I have another area for wood stacks next to it that I have room for the hardwoods.

I have at least 2 years worth seasoned right now and burning isn't nearly as critical here as it was at the old house. Between the tornado damage from last year, clearing the pole shed site, 3 monster birch that died along with a couple others I found, and all the dead black ash in the swamp I just don't know what to do... Some of the black ash is starting to get questionable and those birch won't last long if I don't get them down and split this winter.

The birch from the pole shed site so far is a pile of logs right now. Another week or so and I should be done clearing, then the birch will get split. If I don't immediately split birch I score 2 sides of each log to break the bark seal. The cherry and maple logs I moved to another area on pine runners to keep them off the ground until I can get to them. Oh yeah, and the oak logs I scrounged from the township brush pile... Boy did the wife roll her eyes at me!🤣

Had a white pine die. Decided to take care of it. So many trees around it that there was no way it would fall on its own. Cut the base and pulled it out. All split and stacked in softwood rack. Nothing better than processing firewood on a 90 degree day...

Then picked some berries and cherries.

Wife is in SE WI for onboarding for her new job again this week. I was down with her last week and did a bunch of projects for my sister and inlaws.

Cleaned up a bunch more mess today of broken off pine tops, brush and rotten logs; took down 3 pines and the aspen & cherry that have been hung up over the trail to the water. Didn't burn like I planned because of precipitation. Don't have much room for too much more brush until I burn some of what's already there. Climbed into one of the tangled up mess of tree's and discovered there's more in the tangle than I realized. 5 red pine, a spruce and at least 5 aspen. Flagging then transplanting oak seedlings and saplings when I find them.

I'm bushed and heading to bed soon.

One pine down today, then I moved all the cherry logs to the storage area (boy do hardwood logs have a satisfying "thunk" compared to pine and aspen), then I mowed and trimmed, now I'm burning brush and half rotten logs.

Any bets as to when I fall asleep in the lawn chair? 😂

CL used to be very useful but since marketplace took over it’s been more difficult. I find marketplace to be trash. I don’t know why I’m thinking about wood heat on a morning where my house windows are fogged over because it’s so humid outside but here I am. Stay cool!

FB market place has been a bit of a drought lately here too… but my tree guys have been coming through.

… there’s no better time than “now” to be thinking about wood, the only right amount is “more”!

I’ve only bought a little wood to get started when I bought my insert a couple years ago. Everything else has been scrounging for me too. I probably have $600 in 11+ cords. $400 of that was for start up.

I'm guilty of purchasing some questionable wood when I first started 3 years ago. I'll be entering my 4th season this fall. Side of the road hunting has been successful for me the past few years and I'm lucky to be in a spot where wood burning is a common source of heat. I've teamed up with some neighbors to bulk process and split the winnings.

The past few weeks, I've collected some downed trimmings and logs and got them off the ground. I think I have about a cord left of wood to process both oak and pine. Most of my time has been spent installing window ACs since my heat pump died off during the heat wave. Not much motivation to go outside and process when my house is 85F LOL.

As those few years have gone on, I have been able to rely less on wood which is bad for the hobby but good for my back! At least here, this is the first decent weekend to get some stuff done but we are still pushing 90F outside at the hottest point. It's either been rain, or hot as heck so have to take your pick. Another roadblock for me is having to chop the rounds in half and then split to get them to size... just Jotul 602 things. I'll have to take a wander to the weight loss thread, because this summer so far I've lost 10 lbs! 😂

I know the feeling, I run a 602 in my cabin. There’s been a few times the door wouldn’t close on me 🤣🤣. I take those home and burn em in the big stove.

602’s are a fantastic stove, I’d love to try one of the newer CAT versions.

Absolutely, and my wife is more cavalier with that than me! Door doesn't close, no problem, until the split burns up and half falls out the door and ashes start flying. 😂 😂

I agree! The 602 is a beast, and for supplemental heating it exceeds expectations but processing has its challenges considering the small firebox. You have to enjoy the hobby. My area recently got natural gas, and if we didn't, I'd have that bigger stove to feed the long splits into!

Ran around a bit this morning, but got some time on the splitter today. This is all oak / beech, and even the quartered rounds were heeavvvyy.

I also split some poplar, and box elder I found at the bottom of the oak rounds stack,.. I felt like I was lifting a cloud after all that oak. 🤣

I got a very nice load of mostly Black Locust and White Ash yesterday - with some white grained tree too (soft maple?). I wish all of the wood I collect was this good - easy handling size and dense. I ran out of time and had to leave the Ash trunk which would have provided 5 or 6 big rounds - ouch! Oh well, it was hot, and I was getting tired anyways. I think the white grained wood is Bradford Pear - very good firewood.

I got some time today and stacked most of the oak, 2-1/2 pallets about shoulder height, so a little over a cord.

I Have to figure out what I’m going to do with the beech chunks, their thickness is all over the place from 5”-16”… I usually wouldn’t bother with it… but it’s beech and there’s prolly 1/2 a cord of it (tree service slabs).

Love beech! Seasons fast, burns hot, coals a long time. Great for overnight. Don't have it in the new area 😭. Need to find a source for the more premium hardwoods here. There's oak around, but not much on our property.

Yea, I think they’ll be good for this season. I’m going to use them to fill holes for overnight burns. At first I didn’t like the mound of slabs he dropped… but then I realized they’re beech!😎

Continuing with the clearing. Got a nice birch today. The only truly nice tree that was healthy that I had to take down. I'm tired of cutting wood and clearing brush in the heat and sun...

It seems like I'm mowing all the time this year, when I'm not it has been pretty hot out which makes the deer fly real bad. The boat saw some water the other day, I did look for smaller logs laying on the beach but knowing was hanging around.

I finished the rest of the lawn with the push mower today, usually it rains out a day or two later after I'm finished mowing.
