I can't seem to figure out what kind of wood this is. It seems to burn fast, but will coal for a while. Is this any good? Thanks!

Looks like basswood maybe? I thought Cottonwood at first but i see you are in mass, not a cottonwood area.
 
Ditto on the cottonwood. How did it split?
 
It was split a couple years ago, but I think it was a little stringy.
