Awesome man! Congrats you are up and running! Enjoy the heat!

Thanks for all the help and advice...I like the unit and have only used it one day...hoping to be able to get some nice heat.....

Also scored a Maccollouch chainsaw on Craigslist for $30...runs great.....now I need a splitter!!!

Also got my first burn...I guess it was good to get it out of the way....reloading the stove in a t-shirt (it was warm in there!!) and the back of my left tricep pressed against the inside part of the door handle latch...

Now for the questions: Please bear with me...

Smoke out of the chimney: On start up, it smokes for a bit. Also when the primary burn is done and im pretty much at a coal stage with the stove closed fully down...it will smoke some... Is this normal? I have been getting good secondary action, does this mean I am burning clean?

Reloading: When reloading, I try to not get too much smoke out of the chimney..to achieve this I close the door but don't really tighten it...this lets air rush in creating a hot fire....once I get a decent fire rolling (5 mins) I shut the door adn leavy the air control full open for another 10 minutes or so...then shut about 1/2 way down...then pretty much closed....sometimes in doing this I will get some smoke out of the chimney...its a "lighter" Whiter smoke and not very "thick".... Am I closing down too soon? Need to get hotter first??

I've noticed a similar effect with my stove. Once the wood is in the coaling phase and the secondaries are over I will open up the intake about 10%. This will bring some additional heat out of the coals and prevent smoking. I think most of the harmfull creosote forming deposits and moisture are gone by the time you are in the coaling phase, so a little smoke then is probably okay when compared to a smokey fire that wont get up to temp.

And keeping the door open for 5 minutes on a reload and then keeping the air open for another 10 minutes is probably too long. Either you don't have enough coals and you have to nurse the fire back to life or your wood has some moisture in it. On a proper reload I close the door right away and the air is closed within a few minutes. And then there is no smoke once it lit off.

I look forward to what some other more experienced burners might think. I'm still a newbie compared to many.

I know it's not aluminum- But was curious about something else-

Just curious but take a magnet to that liner and see if it sticks... Im a lil curious about something!!

Are you thinking it's aluminum? I purchased it from a reputable chimney supply company locally? I never thought to even check...it is pretty strong stuff...I was not plyable really unless I put a pry bar on it...
Now you got me thinking....It wasn't very heavy......Ill have to call the wife and have her check..

ok...a magnet doesn't stick??

What does that mean? I thought magnets weren't supposed to stick to stainless??? Im confused

It shouldn't have been very heavy ramconner.

What is the question all about Ranier? You have him concerned. Tell him why.

That liner is fine Ramconner.

Good job and good looking stove and install. Congrats.

As an aside, I replaced all batteries in smoke detectors and moved the fire exstiguisher closer to the stove.

I feel like a crazy person...run outside look at chimney....run inside ajust air....run outside, oh S*&! smoke out of the CHimney, run inside adjust air, run outside - no smoke - running clean!, run in side secondaries firing away, two minutes later fire changes appearance, run outside some smoke again, run inside adjust air.....etc etc etc...did this for about 2 hours...maybe my excitement and goal to burn like you guys?!

I PM'd the OP and told why- Their is a manufacturer of chimney liners on the island that uses 430 SS which will rust and deteriorate and when I saw his liner because of the way it was wrapped I was concerned about the material.. This manufacture uses different materials sometimes and just wanted to make sure so that they would be safe...

HaHa!

At one point I thought about putting a web camera up on the roof pointing at the pipe!
My deck is right next to the stove and I just have to open the slider and take 5 steps though and I can see it...wife thought I was nuts a year ago last fall when we first had the cat stove.

Been there. Then along the way somewhere I realized that the times I did see smoke it was just a little bit and didn't go far. And I am in the middle of five acres.

All part of having a new stove.

Me speaking to wife:
"Hey Hunny, we are going to save a ton of $$ on oil....the downstairs thermostat won't kick the burner on all day!! I just bought us a new stove, I need to buy some ss liner, I also need a new chainsaw, you know to save money on cutting my own wood. I also need a New Splitting axe and Maul maybe a few different sizes, you know...for the hard to split rounds...I also need two chainsaws...you know for different size logs in the woods....I need a new IR thermometer...to make sure im buring at the right temp, you know..so I don't get creosote build up...I need a soot eater to clean the chimney....I also need a new drill...you know to work the soot eater or other chimney cleaning device.....I also need a bigger trailer, you know to save money on all those logs I need to burn...I think I need a log splitter, you know to split the wood faster to save money on heating oil....I need a bigger stronger truck, prefably diesel, you know to haul the splitter and logs, chainsaws, mauls etc...you know to save money on heating oil...."

The savings keep on rolling in....I won't have time to split logs thought since im running in and out of the house...letting the precious heat out.

Believe me. I have never claimed to have saved a dime heating with wood. Just stayed warmer.

Heating with oil is not nearly as fun though...for a while last night I think I got hypnotized by the flames....fell asleep in my chair...

The running in and out will wear out quick. Once you get used to what a good burn looks like you will feel better. You will get hypnotized by the flames lol!

Even my wife, who is not easily impressed, was in awe of the secondaries...The fire was only at TOP of the firbox...not on the wood...looked pretty cool!!

I am assuming secondaries are when the flame shoots out of the tubes on top....?

Yep thats them. What kind of wood you burning and are you loading n/s or e/w or both?
No idea on the wood...it's big but surprisingly Lightweight...seems to catch quick...Im waiting on a load from my friend...I am mainly been burning uglies and mis shapen things....so n/s/w/e it's all in there....I haven't done a full load of nice splits....maybe tonight....

got some good time out of that wood if you loaded it at 9 and still had coals at 6:30.

Actually I was mistaken...I did load at about 8pm and had coals at 630am...BUT, my wife told me she threw a log on at about 3:30 am......I was shocked to see coals this morning....guess that explains it....I called her all excited like a little kid wanting to tell her about the coals STILL THERE!!!! She was like, oh yea, I threw a long on at 3:30am when I let little dog out.. (we found a little dog and still haven't named her...she kinda worked her way into our family...so we call her little dog..)
