Where does my hearth end?

I am working on a remodel where we are putting wood floors over a concrete foundation. We will need a hearth extension and I want to to keep it to code. I have found the size requirements, but I don't know the where the hearth ends and the hearth extension begins.

See the pictures. I have a pre-manufactured unit surrounded my masonry. The masonry sticks out 6 inches beyond the hearth of the premanufactured unit, then drops 12 inches to the floor where I need to add a hearth extension. When I calculate the requirements of my hearth extension, do I include the thickness of the masonry? Put another way, since my masonry extends 6 inches, can my tile extension be only 10in (to meet the 16 in requirement for my sized fireplace)?


What about when measuring for the 8in requirement? The following picture shows the front corner of the fireplace. The ceramic heart of the hearth is fronted by a metal trim that extends 3 inches on either side of the firebox. Do I start my 8in measurement from the ceramic tile or the metal corner?

Normally the hearth extension requirement is measured from the door. Is this a gas fireplace or a wood fireplace with gas logs?

Thank you for getting back to me so soon. The manufacturer (Heatilator) lists it as a wood fireplace, but we only use it with gas and ceramic logs. My understanding is that we need to design as if it were wood, which I understand.

So if I extrapolate you answer that would mean that my tile at 12 inches is sufficient. (in addition to the 6 inch masonry) But I should start measuring the lateral requirements from the left and right side of the door?

Is that correct?

Yes, that will provide 16". Extend it 8" to either side of the door and you should be ok.
