Hey guys, I am getting a 1987 jotul 8. Should I install a pipe damper? Moving up from an intrepid 1. Any other advice for this stove?

Do you know which model 8 this is? Does the stove have a cat?

Looks like the simple, non-cat version. It's pretty easy to run. There's no bypass and just the simple spinner wheel air control. Do a break-in fire burning just a few 2" splits and kindling. Then burn a bit larger fire next using 4-5 three inch splits. After that you should be good to go for the season. I'd probably add a draft damper on the stove pipe about 18" above the stove for better regulation.
