Hi all. First time posting here. I was given a Jotul 8 wood burning with a catalytic combustor. I have two questions. 1. Can this stove run without the combustor? 2. Is there any information available as how to replace the combustor. I took the whole stove apart had it sandblasted and painted got most of it back together but forgot to take pics. Only thing left is the combustor. Thanks.

Which model 8 is this, 8C with the cat at the flue collar or 8TDC with the internal cat? The model number should be on the rear UL tag.

I'm not sure either. Is this showing the top or the back?Can you post a picture of the whole front of the stove including the door?

This seems to be a Jotul 8C which had the catalyst tacked on to the flue collar as an option. The 8TDC had a 6" hole or backing plate on the top IIRC. If it's an 8C, it should be ok to operate without the cat as long as the back plate is installed. @D. Hermit can provide more certain identification and verification.
I have not seen a Jotul 8C personally. The manual for that vintage is sparse in illustration and only mentions the 8C option as a sidebar. Is the rod sticking out of the face at the upper left a bypass damper control?

Yes. The damper control is in the upper left front corner. I have the catalytic combustor. It seems to be in ok shape. Not sure if it just sits on the tabs on the back or is it supposed to fit in the tabs. Wish I could find instructions for replacing it but I cant find anything online.
Yes, this has been bugging me. Your stove sounds like a series 8. If so, it needs the cat which needs to be gasketed or surrounded by Interam insulation. Looking at the UL label again, that is confirmed.

There were so many variations of the model 8s as Jotul tried to make them EPA compliant that it can be confusing. Thankfully, the UL label was still intact on this one.
