K, here we go. I;m a bit hung-over, so I'm typing a bit slow....:lol:
I've got my "field notes" in front of me here.
2 stack reading numbers means I took the reading at 2 places on the stovepipe 16 an 48 inches
All temps are in °F , unless otherwise stated.
8:40 light newspaper Stove top 65, stack 65/65
8:42 fire goes out, try again.
8:43 Put newspaper in two openings close to bottom cantre of logs, without moving any of the wood. ;-)
8:46 light paper again, leave door slightly ajar for a couple of minutes, draft control all the way open. Fire stays lit.
9:00 Stove top 150, Pipe 425
9:02 Draft turned down to 1/2
9:04 Draft turned down to 1/4
9:05 stove top 250, stack 575
9:06 Draft turned right down to lowest setting
9:10 Stove top 450, stack 560. Fire "evolves" to "top-down" fire, buttom no longer flaming, top pieces burning briskly, very active secondaries. Observe EBT still closed.
9:15 stove top 550, stack still 560
9:18 First pic taken.

Continued:
9:20 Stove top 640, stack down to 530 (Tortise passes Hare). Thermometer on wall, 6-1/2 feet from stove shows 75, I'll call this "room" temp here-on-in.
9:25 Stove top 690 Stack still 530
9:30 Stove top 725 Stack holding at 530. Discover I own IR thermometer :lol: Take temp readings of metal sides of stove. Sides are 95, back is 90.
9:35 Stove Top 740 Stack falls to 525. Verify Magnetic thermometers are accurate, they are. They are whithin 5 degrees of IR. Room is 80
9:36 In-line blower kicks kicks on, drawing warm air from above stove.
9:40 Stove top Hits 750, highest reading observed so far. Stack continues to verygradually drop, now at 520/300 (second # taken 48" above flue collar)
9:46 Observe EBT housing just warm to touch on bottom 110 .Leave house on errend.

Room temp was 80 at 9:35 when blower first kicked in, and dropped to 76 by 940, then crept up 81 by 10:10. This temp is on the thermometer 6-1/2 feet from stove. Stove is located in basement. Upstairs the temp was around 64 before I lit the stove, now it's 69
Heat is moved up here by an 8" in-line blower and ducting. The air is picked up through a furnace filter mounted in ceiling above stove.
Wood used was Poplar, cut and stacked about 4 years ago (exact age unknown).

Nope The Summit is non-cat, and that reading is the magnetic stovetop thermometer, My IR thermometer blanks out at about 560, so I can't use it for measuring that temp.

Yep, but it's not as scary as it seems. What you are seeing is all softwood, I don't know what would happen with all hardwood.
As you saw in my post, the fire kinda "climbed" to the top of the wood, and burned it top-down. This is probably why the EBT didn't do anything for the first 3 hours or so.
I wouldn't advise anyone do this in their stove without being VERY familiar with how it burns. Having the stove glowing red hot while the draft is closed, and the firebox is full would be a bit unsettling to say the least.

At 2:00, I took the temps, then added 13 pounds of wood.Here goes.

As we can see, the stove probably cooled down to the temp it was at re-load sometime around 4:45. That gives 2.75 hours on that 13 lbs of wood. While definitely not exact, we can assume there was roughly the same amount of wood in the stove at 4:45 as there was at 2:00, just before I added the wood.
Averaging that out 13/2.75=4.72 lbs/hr. Since this is only a rough estimate, let's round that up to 4.75 Lbs/hr just for simplicity.
4.75 x 8600 = 40850 btu/hr. I think that's how the stove makers get the "seasoned cordwood" number they use in their specs. BG, correct me if I'm wrong.
Now, the PE website has the Summit listed at 80% efficiency so, 40850 X 80 % = 32680 BTU actually going to heat the house.
Another thing to notice is, as the stack temps (and draft) went up, the EBT temp went DOWN. My theory is the extra air flow through the EBT cools it down a little bit.
Thoughts?

Well, you get the award for being the only member on this thing that I know of that looks at the thermo and sees it at 750 and headed up and leaves the house. :coolsmirk: No wonder they call the money there loonies. :lol:

Social was good. I am pretty familiar with the stove. I wouldn't leave a stove I didn't trust like that, though.
Stack temp was on it's way down, so I knew the stove wasn't threatening to run away. :coolsmile:

We actually had a dollar coin for a while in the nineties. The only place I know of that gave them as change was at the Post Office. Put a twenty dollar bill in for a couple of stamps and the things clanging into the change tray sounded like you hit the big one on a slot machine.
5 hr burn for all that wood? I see lots of people posting burn times like 8 hrs, I just installed my Drolet Eastwood and the most we put in is 3 or 4 pieces (15 lbs total) and we get about 3-4 hrs tops. How do you guys get 8 hr burn times? seems I need to leave the draft open a little or it will smolder and smoke. Do you guys get 8 hrs with no visible smoke coming out of your chiminey?
