The problem with product names there will always be some percentage of people that don't like the name. In the end, name it whatever you want.. it's an inanimate object. If you're in the market for a stove like this you prolly care a whole lot more about the price/performance, the warranty and service then the marketing hype.

Those words were from someone wiser than I but they surely are very true. I also remember some words of wisdom spoken to me a long, long time ago when he said, "If you try to please everyone, you usually end up pleasing no-one." Much truth in that one too.

I am also reminded of the old saw, "A goose is a goose, dress it as you will, but it remains a goose still." In other words, although some perhaps may like or dislike the name, that is only the dress. It will take nothing away from the stove as the stove will perform no matter what the name.

I like the name change much better.

For me "Steal" made me think either a) Someone was doing a bit of thievery or b) Someone at Woodstock did not know how to spell very well.

Truth be told though . . . if all we really have to debate is a name . . . this stove will probably be another winner. I mean we've got stoves named after cities and towns, stoves that just have a bunch of letters and numbers and even a stove named Princess -- what he-man wood burner wants to have a Princess stove ?

I sorta liked the theme of Union they had going, but I know that upsets some! So Ideal is always Ideal. In fact, the roadrunner and other cartoon characters probably prefer Ideal brand products to their usual ACME brand.

Believe it or not, some people today associate the word "union" with bad things. It's terrible, but true.
I thought it was a great name myself and never considered that some folks hate unions. I looked at it as more patriotic - that is, the union of states...with a secondary meaning of the unions who built the industrial might in this country in the last century.

But my guess is only a guess. You'd have to do polling and focus groups to find out whether that is true or more.

The comparison of this new stove's actual lab tested cord wood efficiency to the default number set for non-cats back in 1988 ain't getting it though.

Marketing is a science in itself, although many will cringe when I say that.

Gearhead and Steel are words unlikely to appeal to the women in the family, but the price and the glass view and the cleanliness will. So the guy is gonna get sucked in by the names, logo's, etc. then he will have to convince the better 1/2.

That is wrong from top to bottom. Old world and outdated marketing thinking that is no longer applicable.

Can't say I'm in the game now, but are you saying that women go for the "old gas station" type of look and "deck out the garage" type of marketing? I guess we could call that NASCAR marketing.

The women in my family are either older, quite soft (we'll say old fashioned female) or very young and hip. Not a grease monkey in the bunch.

Ideal Steel is a local company here that makes safety guardrails for public buildings, factories, loading dock stuff. Maybe they have a trademark on the name?

You splain dis one? Btw, Sam Adams Boston lager is good stuff!!

On the blog they compared the new stoves efficiency of 80 something percent to the rating for most EPA non-cats. They had the new stove efficiency tested but most manufacturers don't pay the ten grand or so for that test and just use the 63 percent "default" EPA number. Which was determined back in the eighties. All of the non-cats have improved greatly since back then.

I can't wait to see the new stove in DC this month but that comparison just jumped out at me. Touchy non-cat owner I guess.
