I have an un-insulated liner running through 3 stories of external masonry chimney.

I have decided to add insulation when I add a block off plate.

(Never mind the discussion of whether it is actually needed for the sake of this argument)

I was quoted 400$ plus labor to pull the existing liner, add insulation and replace.

Is this a reasonable way to proceed?

It was no fun to do mine, pull it out (pulled mine out from the bottom), then deal with the spray on glue and getting the insulation wrap perfectly in the middle, then running the chicken wire, ohh yea, then the fun part of putting it back down the chimney.

If I had to do it over again I might pay someone to pull it out and I apply the insulation and have them put it back down.

Looking at rockford's website 25ft of 1/2" is going to be about $300 with shipping.

That's a steal! Assuming they are using 1/4" foil faced insulation and SS mesh wrap. Make sure that the wrap is included and not just a wire wrapped around it.
