I use can lids from dog/cat food...label them with date split & type of wood and nail them to a split. Wife thinks I'm nuts but she also knows whay type of memory I have so she knows this is probably a good idea.

Good idea, i never thought about marking mine before.
Not positive, but think the pile I am taking from now is 6 years old.

Mind you I am also figuring out I am an oddity here, not the norm.
I do not neatly stack my wood, or split it small either like most of you do.
Many of you split your wood to small pieces, I seem lazy and usually half,or at best quarter my wood, unless its over say a 12 incher.
Anything 8 inches or less gets halved is all.
Anything under about 3 or 4 inches goes in whole, depends on my mood.

I think you're perfectly normal and not a geek.

Mrswoodchip thinks your wood is brilliantly organised with the dates and I have orders to get a marker pen tomorrow and tidy up my piles :)

. . . of course this is coming from a guy whose wife tells him he is a geek . . . she says this with love though.

Jake, is this your shed??

If so can you post a pic of the whole thing, it looks kinda like what I wanna build this summer. Is there much of an overhang in the front?

Yup . . . this is my shed. I think I have a 2-3 foot overhang.

Nothing so abnormal there unless we are abnormal in keeping a good supply of wood on hand. As for splitting larger or smaller, larger is usually better as long as you have time for it to dry, which you do. But there are some poor folks who have to split smaller to try to make seasoning a bit faster. Of course they do not get the longer burn times that comes with the larger splits.

What do you mean "nerd" for marking wood? Are saying there people out there who do not do this?? Those are the ones that are weird and not to be trusted ;-P

OK, I am feeling much better about myself now. ;-P Thanks guys. Some other good ideas for keeping track too. Of course Dennis doesn't have to 'cause he's got so much wood he could be off a couple years and still be burning 4 year old wood.

That's just awesome, you build it yourself? What's the floor constructed of? I don't know how I haven't seen it before.
If you don't mind me asking... what'd it run ya $$?

I would do that if I could remember to bring out the marker!
gzecc, Now you are admitting you are old too! ;-P I see you have an old Buck like mine. How long you had it?
Just a few years. Bought it used but it was never used. It was taken out of a house demo. The guy that I bought it from said a woman lived in the house alone and never used it. It was too big for his house so he sold it. Weird to have a 20 yr old insert that was unused.

Is that about 8 cords capacity?

If memory serves me correctly (and it doesn't always do so) . . . I believe it's 12 x 20 or 10 x 20 . . . at one time I figured I could easily get 8 cords of wood in the shed . . . which is very nice . . . I end up using half of it in one winter and then restock the shed with wood for the second year . . . it's just a very good feeling when you have two years worth of wood under cover and another year's worth of wood outside.

Yes . . . I built it myself . . . one of the reasons it is as large as it is . . . I built some of it on the cement pilings used on a giant swingset that was in our backyard.

I used the cement pilings, block and rocks and built the floor out of 2 x 12 (maybe 2 x 10) rough cut cedar . . . bearing in mind the heavy weight load the joists are something like 12 or 16 inches on center and I have supported each stringer underneath. On top are rough cut cedar planks.

Since I was able to re-use many of the 2 x 4s (many nailed together to make 4 x 4s) by tearing down an old camp I think I have maybe $500 or $600 invested into this . . . however as mentioned my memory is pretty bad . . . a search for the original thread might show you if my memory is truly all that accurate or not. I know I paid for the flooring material, cinder blocks, nails, a few 2 x 4s in the walls, the 2 x 12s (could be 2 x 10s) for the roof stringers and some shingles (some other shingles I scavenged off the walls of the old cabin.)
